COLLEGE PARK, Md., April 15, 2021 /PRNewswire/ Large majorities of American voters support reforms that would limit or remove barriers to economic opportunities, housing, and voting for people with criminal records, according to a new survey released today by the Program for Public Consultation (PPC) at the University of Maryland.
A representative sample of 2,487 American voters were given a detailed presentation of numerous proposed Congressional reforms that would restrict employers, licensing boards and public housing authorities from disqualifying people based on their criminal records. President Biden s new executive order directing the Justice Department to phase out the use of private prisons targets only a small number of incarcerated people in the United States, sidestepping a campaign promise around the use of privately run facilities for detained migrants.
The Justice Department will no longer renew contracts with privately operated criminal detention centers, according to the order, reversing a Trump administration directive that countered action put forth by former President Barack Obama at the height of the 2016 presidential race.
