A temporary restraining order is all that currently allows 22 Indonesian Christians, who overstayed their visas after fleeing violence in their native country, to remain in the Central Jersey communities they’ve lived in for more than two decades.
U.S. District Judge Esther Salas eventually will lift her order and rule whether those immigrants can petition to be allowed to remain in the U.S. permanently. Briefs from both sides are due Thursday.
But even if Salas rules that they can request asylum, the federal government will be able to deport them at any time before their cases are heard. ....

It took more than four tortuous years and the creaky machinations of New Jersey Democratic politics before adult-use marijuana was legalized earlier this year. Now, the hard work actually began Monday with the first meeting of the state’s Cannabis Regulatory Commission.
The commission started the formidable task of constructing what is expected to be a safe and profitable $1 billion weed industry from scratch. That industry will be guided by a new regulatory bureaucracy created by this commission and given a mandate to mend the racial and social sins wrought by decades of biased and unjust law enforcement during marijuana prohibition. ....

Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man shot and killed Sunday by police in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, told his mother right before his death that police pulled him over because of the air fresheners hanging from his rearview mirror.
Police said they stopped Wright because of an expired registration. 
The encounter collapsed into violence when officers moved to arrest Wright for an outstanding warrant over a missed court date. He got back into the car as Officer Kim Potter threatened to tase him. ....
