NEW YORK – New York Attorney General Letitia James led a group of local elected officials and community leaders in a walking tour of Manhattan’s Chinatown to support small businesses that have been financially devastated by the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, on Friday, April 23.
Together, the group visited local restaurants and shops, and encouraged New Yorkers to patronize Asian-American-owned businesses in Chinatown and other neighborhoods. Following the tour, Attorney General James held a community conversation with organization leaders to address the rise in Anti-Asian hate crimes, discuss community concerns, and reiterate solidarity for New York’s Asian-American community. ....

More than 400 Asian New Yorkers sign letter opposing Yang

Pauline Park, a Korean American transgender progressive activist, was skeptical of Andrew Yang when he ran for president. She thought his signature universal basic income proposal was too “vague” and did not not articulate a “larger vision” for addressing inequality and pursuing social justice.
But as Yang geared up to run for New York City mayor and eventually jumped into the race in January, Park found the candidate’s platform more concerning. She didn’t like his position on the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement and his vow to “push back against” the movement if elected. His support for providing more resources to the New York City Police Department was another, and Park said Yang has failed to outline a clear affordable housing plan. (Read Yang’s plan here.) ....

New York authorities file hate-crime charges in attack on Asian American woman

NEW YORK Local authorities said Wednesday they have filed three felony hate-crime charges against 38-year-old Brandon Elliot in the brutal stomping of an elderly Asian American woman a case that could test the efficacy of such statutes amid a national groundswell of concern over rising anti-Asian attacks.
Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. said Elliot a homeless Black man on parole after serving 17 years in prison for killing his mother told 65-year-old Vilma Kari “you don’t belong here” before launching the unprovoked attack in Midtown on Monday. Elliot faces two counts of second-degree assault and one count of attempted first-degree assault that could carry a maximum sentence of 25 years, as well as other punishments for violating his parole, authorities said. ....
