I-Team 8 drops off 900+ unemployment complaints at Workforce Development

The DWD declined an interview with I-Team 8 on Monday.
“I really do not feel like they addressed what’s wrong,” says Danita Owens, whose brother is being asked to repay $8,025 in pandemic unemployment benefits, even though he was deemed eligible.
“Somebody needs to step up to help all of these claimants, not each individual claim, because the issue is not different,” Owens said.
Owens says since the press conference, nothing has changed and she says many questions have gone unanswered.
“Why can’t you grant the waiver? And why was the waiver even asked for? I just feel like that it leaves an open end to an answer that we really didn’t get answered,” Owens said. ....

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Officials with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development held a news conference today.
They addressed Hoosier concerns and frustrations over unemployment benefits.
Indiana s unemployment checks stopped on June 26th, but now they re back up and rolling. For some folks in the Wabash Valley, the process of getting that assistance hasn t been easy.
According to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, this time last year, 11.2 percent of Hoosiers were out of a job. Now that number is down to 4.1 percent. Since March 2020, the state has distributed 8-point-6 billion dollars to 875,000 people. So what took so long for benefits to start back up? The department says it had to reach out to the U.S. Department of Labor. ....

How the Department of Workforce Development stonewalls Hoosiers

“Hi, I’m Richard Essex of WISH-TV. We are trying to make an appointment to see the commissioner, Fred Payne,” News 8’s Richard Essex said. “Is this the office?”
Upon News 8’s arrival at the office, a security guard hired by the state said she wasn’t sure where Payne’s office was located.
“Well, you can go down there to the other office and get a hold of him,” she said.
The security guard escorted News 8 to another office that she called the intake office. Once inside that office, News 8 made the same request; a woman lady behind the desk at the intake office said she was new to the job and wasn’t sure who we needed to speak with. ....

Indiana attorney general looking into Ohio unemployment scam

Jan 29, 2021 / 10:35 PM EST
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) The state of Ohio couldn’t tell I-Team 8 how many people in Indiana are victims of unemployment fraud.
But after our story aired last week, we heard from several people. A spokesperson for the state of Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services told I-team 8 that of the 1.4 million claims for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, almost 800,000 have been flagged as fraudulent.
And the problem has crossed over the border and into the office of the Indiana Attorney General.
“In fact, I just got off the phone with one,” said David Swetman of the Indiana Attorney General’s Office. He says the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance money allocated by Congress has been a feeding frenzy for fraudsters.   ....
