Tim Ryan planning to declare run for Ohio Senate seat by March: NYT

Former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland (D) told the Times that he believes Ryan is “the person with the best chance, given this political climate we’re in” and Ohio’s increasingly Republican voting patterns.
The Ohio chapter of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers has already endorsed Ryan for the Senate seat, even though he hasn’t announced a campaign.
A representative for Ryan s office said they could not confirm the Times report.
Ryan, who has served in the House for 18 years and represents a district with many blue-collar workers and union members, told the Times when asked about his discussions with fellow Democrats that he was “encouraged by their support, enthusiasm and commitment.” ....

Here’s the shrewdest thing said so far about Ohio’s 2022 race to succeed Sen. Rob Portman: “If  Jim Jordan decides to run, it is highly likely he will win that [Republican] primary.”
That’s what Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley, a Democrat, told The New York Times last week. Whaley, who herself may run for the Senate or for governor next year, was 100 percent correct.
Before anyone says it’s too soon the think about Campaign ’22, cleveland.com reported Tuesday that some Democrats are floating the name of ex-state Health Director Amy Acton as a Senate candidate. Acton  was GOP Gov. Mike DeWine’s anti-COVID-19 point-person. She resigned in June partly because mulish General Assembly Republicans fought ant-virus measures she ordered. ....

Sen. Amy Acton? Portman's exit from Ohio Senate race opens doors for Democrats

COLUMBUS It took fewer than 48 hours to rock Ohio s political world.
First, Republican Sen. Rob Portman shocked Ohio politicians when he announced Monday that he wouldn t run for re-election in 2022. The well-funded incumbent was considered a safe bet for the seat in a state that President Donald Trump won handily, twice. Democrats were still mulling who would challenge him.
Then, former Ohio Department of Health Director Amy Acton emerged as a possible Democratic contender for U.S. Senate, Cleveland.com first reported.
That article got a signal boost from author Connie Schultz, a prominent Ohio Democrat and the wife of U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, who tweeted: Imagine Dr. Amy Acton as Ohio s next U.S. senator. I sure can.   ....
