The president of Planned Parenthood, Alexis McGill Johnson, last week announced in a New York Times op-ed a change in the organization’s treatment of its founder, the pioneering birth control advocate Margaret Sanger. “We have defended Sanger as a protector of bodily autonomy and self-determination, while excusing her association with white supremacist groups and eugenics as an unfortunate ‘product of her time,’” wrote Johnson, but now, “[w]e will no longer make excuses or apologize for Margaret Sanger’s actions.” Johnson stops just short of labeling Sanger a racist, saying it’s “not a simple yes or no question” and we “don’t know what was in Sanger’s heart,” but concludes that “we don’t need to in order to condemn her harmful choices.” ....

Spain officially ends FORCED sterilization of people with mental disabilities – a practice still LEGAL in many US states

The Spanish government will no longer sterilize disabled people against their will. Despite the fact that eugenics is generally considered a thing of the past, forced sterilization is still permitted in multiple US states.
The Spanish government officially ended the forced sterilization of disabled people on Thursday, publishing new legislation in an official newsletter. According to the newsletter,
“In the last decade, more than a thousand forced sterilizations have been practiced in Spain, most of them on women.”
But while the Spanish government’s newsletter described the now-illegal practice as a
“serious anomaly in human rights terms,” one might be disturbed to find out that involuntary sterilization is still permitted in some US states. ....
