North Dakota Looking At Online Poker Legalization

In 2005, North Dakota made headlines in the global online poker industry after Republican representative Jim Kasper authored a bill which sought to legalize online poker in the state.
During that time, Kasper was contesting the Interstate Wire Act of 1961 which criminalized all forms of online gambling. The bill was able to get enough support from the House, but it was ultimately voted down in the Senate as several senators were concerned about violating federal law.
Kasper Introduces New Online Poker Proposal
Now, 15 years since his first attempt to push for online poker in North Dakota, Kasper is taking another shot, but this time he wants to make sure he gets enough support from local residents. ....

Rep. Jim Kasper Seeks to Bring Online Poker to North Dakota


State Rep. Jim Kasper has anything to say about it,
North Dakota will be added to the list.
Earlier this month, Kasper, a Republican who has represented District 46 (Fargo) since 2001, has introduced
House Concurrent Resolution 3012, which seeks to put a measure on the 2022 general election ballot to ask residents whether or not they want to permit online poker. The measure has already shown bi-partisan support in the House.
“The country is just going more and more into gaming online,” Kasper said a week after introducing his bill. “Let’s not leave North Dakota as one of the few states that doesn’t allow it.” ....

The Biden administration could be a boon for online poker, and may likely reverse a decision that put interstate play into murky waters.

In 2018, the Trump administration reversed a 2011 opinion on the Interstate Wire Act of 1961 that said the law only applied to sports betting. The 2011 opinion served as the basis for the formation of an interstate compact between Nevada, New Jersey, and Delaware that helped create larger player pools and made games more attractive to aficionados. The 2018 reversal put the brakes on Pennsylvania’s plans to join the fray, which would have practically doubled the population base for interstate online poker. ....
