The scorpene-class submarine INS Karanj commissioned into the Indian Navy in Mumbai on Wednesday, in the presence of Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh and Admiral (Retired) VS Shekhawat. This is the third in the series of six submarines built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders. Two submarines of the project namely INS Kalvari and Khanderi have been commissioned in December 2017 and September 2019 respectively. Scorpene is the conventional submarine designed by the Naval Group for the export market.
Commanding Officer Captain Gaurav Mehta, who has served over 20 years in the navy, said "We can proudly say that Karanj is the first truly indigenous submarine. It encapsulates the spirit of ‘Make in India’. Karanj is like a child to us who we have seen growing into a war weapon."

Mumba: A Scorpene-class submarine, INS Karanj, was commissioned into the Indian Navy in Mumbai on Wednesday. The ceremony was conducted in the presence of Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh and Admiral (Retired) VS Shekhawat.
Six submarines are to be inducted into the Navy under the Scorpene project. The contract for the construction and Transfer-of-Technology for six Scorpene submarines in series has Naval Group (formerly DCNS) of France as ‘Collaborator’ and are being built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) under the ‘Make In India’ programme.

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders said that the sea trials of first ship Visakhapatnam of Project P-15B, which is due for delivery later this year, have commenced. It is a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence (MoD), which is engaged in the construction and repair of warships and submarines for use by the Indian Navy and other vessels for commercial clients.

Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh and Admiral (Retired) VS Shekhawat were present at the ceremony."The impetuous to atmanirbharta or indigenisation is a fundamental tenet of Indian Navy's growth story and future trajectory," the Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh today.He also said that the Indian Navy has been a strong proponent of indigenization and self-reliance in defence over the past seven decades. "At present, out of 42 ships and submarines on order, 40 are being constructed in Indian shipyards," the Navy chief said.

Former Navy chief Admiral V S Shekhawat, who was part of the commissioning crew of the old Karanj and later the Commanding officer during the 1971 IndoPak war, was the chief guest for the commissioning ceremony at the Naval Dockyard.

NEW DELHI: The Indian Navy commissioned its third indigenously constructed stealth Scorpene-class Submarine INS Karanj on Wednesday at the Mazagaon Naval Dockyard Mumbai. 
Six Scorpene-class submarines are being built in India by the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai, under collaboration with M/s Naval Group, France.
Indian Navy said, “INS Karanj would form part of the Western Naval Command’s Submarine fleet and would be another potent part of the Command’s arsenal.” Commodore Anil Jai Singh (Retd) Defence Analyst added, “With the focus now on Underwater Domain Awareness INS Karanj will be a valuable addition to the Navy’s underwater operational capability with its modern technology.”
