Imperial funds 17 new equality, diversity and inclusion projects
New equality, diversity and inclusion projects have been funded to highlight diverse voices and encourage open conversations and collective learning.
Eleven creative and exciting projects have been awarded funding in the second year of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Seed Fund. An additional six projects have been funded through the Strategic Priorities Fund and the Vice-Provost of Education and Student Experience.
Professor Stephen Curry, Imperial’s Assistant Provost for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion said: “I’m delighted that despite COVID-19 we received so many fantastic applications for the EDI Seed Fund. The projects will highlight diverse staff and student voices, empower different groups to share their experiences and support open and honest conversations and learning from each other across the College.” ....

As a disabled person, there are days I don t want to leave the house.
I wish I could say I don t care what society thinks or assumes about me and my body. But the truth is, when my body is judged, ostracised, othered I do care. Some days I have to really push myself.
It could be a question from a stranger: What happened? Taken aback by my body.
Or the daily comments.
If I were you I don t think I d want to live. ....

We need beach access for everyone, and that includes people with a disability


Beach trips are a traditional part of our summers, but for some Kiwis and their family members living with a disability it can be a limiting experience.
Around 1 in 4 New Zealanders have a disability. Their disability arises not from their impairments but from having to live in world designed by people who think everyone is the same.
It is society, not the individual’s impairment, that is disabling. Thus, it is society that should be enabling.
Examples of enabling measures are seen in efforts to provide beach access for those with disabilities with the installation of beach mats for wheelchairs, or the provision of beach wheelchairs. ....
