Hundreds of people took to the streets of North Carolina to protest two devastating anti-trans bills that threaten “the basic human right to be human”, activists say.
Multiple advocacy groups marched in downtown Asheville on Sunday (2 May) as the state proposes legislation that could deny trans youth the right to healthcare or make it illegal to express their gender identities.
Chants of “Trans lives matter,” and “L-G-B-T the Q is not silent!” rang out as the call to action echoed off the tall buildings,
“The legislation would take away just the basic human right to be human,” said Julia Holladay, a mother and a board member with Youth OUTright WNC, speaking to the network. ....

At least 16 states have taken action to ban doctors from performing transgender surgeries and procedures on minors.
Arkansas became the first state to ban the surgeries and procedures for minors when the Legislature overrode Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson’s veto of the Save Adolescents From Experimentation Act.
Polling conducted by the conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation found that 57% of Americans oppose allowing minors with gender dysphoria to receive gender transition surgery, puberty blockers, or cross-sex hormones. ....

California spent four years as a leading bulwark against the racism and other prejudices of the Trump administration. Trump and his minions may be gone from the White House, but the poison they spread remains virulent around the land and California is still fighting the old battles.
Case in point: Bias against transgender people, who have become a favored target of legislators in red states. A California law designed to combat this campaign elsewhere is now in the crosshairs of those who wish to narrow the civil rights of this beleaguered group. ....

NC Lawmakers Move to Protect Youth from Transgender Drugs, Surgeries

Three North Carolina Republican lawmakers recently introduced legislation that would bar doctors from prescribing transgender drugs to or performing gender transition surgeries on individuals younger than 21.
Senate Bill 514, called the Youth Health Protection Act, is defined as an “act to protect minors from administration of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones and other related actions, procedures, and treatments.”
The measure, introduced by GOP Sens. Ralph Hise, Warren Daniel, and Norman Sanderson, would also protect the rights of parents to “withhold consent for any treatment, activity, or mental health care services that are designed and intended to form their child’s conceptions of sex and gender or to treat gender dysphoria or gender nonconformity.” ....

There are so far 192 anti-LGBTQ bills under consideration in state legislatures across the United States. Of those, 93 directly target transgender people.
Under a newly proposed bill targeting transgender youths in North Carolina, government employees would be required to notify the parents of any minors they witnessed “exhibiting symptoms of gender dysphoria” or “gender nonconformity.” The Youth Health Protection Act specifies that the notification should come in writing, describing “relevant circumstances” with “reasonable specificity.”
It’s good for laws to be as specific as possible, and so it’s worth pointing out that this proposed wording is vague. What, precisely, does the bill consider “a desire to be treated in a manner incongruent with the minor’s sex”? Is it when a student known as Samantha asks to now be c ....
