The central government’s state of emergency over the spread of COVID-19 was formally expanded Wednesday to cover Aichi and Fukuoka prefectures.
The measure, which had already covered Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo prefectures, will be in place until at least May 31. The state of emergency took effect on April 25 for the capital and the three western prefectures and was initially slated to end on Tuesday. The government decided on the 20-day extension last week. ....

As Osaka's COVID-19 crisis worsens, Tokyo and Aichi offer to take patients

Osaka – An explosion of coronavirus cases in Osaka Prefecture is overwhelming medical resources, with hospitals forced to turn away patients who, in some cases, then had to spend hours in an ambulance before they could finally be admitted.
The number of severely ill patients in the prefecture as of Wednesday was equivalent to 141% of available hospital beds
for such cases. The same day, a record 1,260 infections were reported, along with 14 deaths.
On Thursday, Osaka reported 1,171 new cases and a record 44 deaths.
Concerned about Osaka s worsening situation, the governors of Tokyo and Aichi have pitched a new idea they are willing to accept moderately ill Osaka coronavirus patients transferred by helicopter to their hospitals. ....

Nagoya – Nagoya Mayor Takashi Kawamura was elected in Sunday’s mayoral election for the fifth time despite being embroiled in a controversial political battle with the local governor.
Kawamura, 72, was challenged by Toshiaki Yokoi, a former city assembly member who is backed by the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition partner Komeito, as well as the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan and the Democratic Party for the People. ....
