Nestlé, Unilever and Mondelēz International are among the food majors calling for an EU-wide ‘phase out’ of caged hens in farming.
An estimated 413 million laying hens are raised across the bloc, producing 6.9m tonnes of eggs or egg product per year. Average egg consumption is calculated at 12kg per capita per year.
While progress has been made to improve welfare standards for laying hens in recent years, notably via the European Commission’s banning of battery-caged eggs under Directive 1999/74/EC in 2012, many in the food sector believe more can be done. ....

Candida auris is an emerging multidrug-resistant yeast. We describe an ongoing
C. auris outbreak that began in October 2019 in Los Angeles, California, USA. We used genomic analysis to determine that isolates from 5 of 6 patients belonged to clade III; 4 isolates were closely related.
Candida auris was isolated from a patient in Tokyo, Japan in 2009 (
1), although clinical isolates have been retrospectively identified from as early as 1996 (
2). Since then, bloodstream and other invasive infections caused by
C. auris have been reported worldwide (
5). Many strains of
C. auris are multidrug-resistant; some strains require elevated MICs to azoles, echinocandins, and polyenes. In 2019, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) listed ....

There has been a surge of interest recently on the development of plant‐based milk alternatives due to increasing consumer concerns about the ethics, sustainability, and healthiness of animal‐based milks.
Consequently, producers are having to quickly develop and test new formulations to meet rising consumer demand using a range of protein sources such as soy, oat, pea, almond, coconut and flaxseed.
But a lack of standardized analytical methods and protocols is stifling successful innovation in the area, and the more widespread adoption of plant milks is being held back by products lacking the sensory attributes, stability, and functional performance of real cow’s milk. ....

Researchers identify human BCAS3 and C16orf70 as novel autophagic proteins
Autophagy is an intracellular degradation process of cytosolic materials and damaged organelles. Researchers at Ubiquitin Project of TMIMS have been studying the molecular mechanism of mitophagy, the selective autophagy process to eliminate damaged mitochondria. PINK1 (a serine/threonine kinase) and Parkin (a ubiquitin ligating enzyme: E3) work together to ubiquitylate the outer membrane proteins of damaged mitochondria, then ubiquitin chains are recognized as signals for autophagy degradation. Dysfunction of mitophagy causes a decrease in mitochondrial quality with overproduction of ROS, and is linked to neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson s disease. ....

Cytotherapy reports that the use of CAR (chimeric antigen receptor) T-cells programmed to recognize
Cryptococcus spp. fungi was effective in combating infection in vitro and in mice.

C. neoformans are present in soil with dead organic matter and places contaminated by the droppings of pigeons and other birds. They cause systemic mycoses in the human organism.
