Fears that working horses and donkeys will pay a price for Covid-19 pandemic

The world’s working horses and donkeys are likely to pay a long-term price in the fall-out from the Covid-19 pandemic, according to researchers.
There are estimated to be between 100 million and 112 million working equids, allied to the lives of 600 million people, many of whom are poor.
The working equid community includes some of the world’s most marginalised people, who rely on animals for their daily lives and livelihoods.
The pandemic was declared internationally on March 11 last year. Countries have been impacted variably, depending on the different disease control measures imposed.

Donkey on the mend after charities step in to provide 'life-saving' sarcoid surgery

A donkey with a severe sarcoid is recovering after welfare charities stepped in to get him the specialist veterinary care he needed to survive.
Skye, an eight-year-old skewbald who was living on the grounds of a distillery in Fort William in the Scottish Highlands, had a large sarcoid on his chest that needed urgent veterinary attention.
A local groom and volunteers looked after Skye and a pony he lived with, after their owner could no longer care for them. They were told by a vet that Skye would need specialist surgery and dedicated aftercare, owing to the severity of the sarcoid. A combination of all these factors meant that it was suggested the “only option” could be to put the donkey down.

A donkey suffering from a form of cancer has received life-saving surgery, thanks to two international animal welfare charities.
Eight-year-old Skye, who was living on the grounds of a distillery in Fort William, Lochabar, in the Scottish Highlands, had a large growth on his chest that needed urgent veterinary attention.

FEI Endurance Horse Abuse Case Overturned – The Horse

The rider of an Arabian horse whose leg broke during an endurance race in France has been relieved of a 20-year sanction for doping and horse abuse, following the decision of an international appeals court.
In June 2020, the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) penalized the rider, Shaik Abdul Aziz Bin Faisal Mohamed Al Qasimi, of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), following the October 2016 death of 10-year-old Castlebar Contraband during a 90-kilometer 1* race in Fontainebleau, France. The sanctions included a two-year suspension for the alleged use of xylazine, a prohibited substance that can lower heart rates, and an 18-year suspension for other alleged acts of horse abuse, including repeated nerve blocking in the affected leg—which could mask pain that would otherwise red-flag a pending catastrophic injury—and sores from poorly fitting tack. The FEI also required Al Qasimi to pay 17,500 Swiss francs ($19,300US) in fines and 15,000 Swiss francs ($16,500US) in legal fees.

When vets first examined the growth on Skye the donkey’s chest, they feared he would have to be put down.
But thanks to two dedicated charities, the eight-year-old – often seen grazing in the grounds of a Fort William distillery – is on the road to recovery.
A local vet was contacted after a large growth was spotted on Skye’s chest, which was found to be sarcoid, a kind of skin cancer.
The vet warned that the donkey may have to be put to sleep or undergo specialist surgery and dedicated aftercare.

A seismic day for animal welfare in Britain: Maximum jail terms jump for worst offences
A campaign by animal welfare organisations in Britain has resulted in a major increase in the maximum sentence for the most serious animal cruelty offences.
The Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Act has completed its final reading in the House of Lords and has received Royal Assent, meaning sentences for animal cruelty will increase from a maximum of six months to five years.
The charity World Horse Welfare said it warmly welcomed the passage of the long-awaited bill.
It has been part of a coalition of leading animal welfare organisations that have been pushing Britain’s parliament to increase penalties.
