Restoring Constitutional Observance - The Harvard Law Record

The Harvard Law Record
We live in a post-constitutional universe.
We have been reversing course since the American Revolution when George Washington turned aside a crown in favor of a Republic and Thomas Paine preached in
Common Sense: “For so in absolute governments the King is the law, so in free countries the law ought to be king.”
The President of the United States is now crowned with vastly more unchecked power than the tyranny King George III exercised over our forefathers which provoked the American Revolution.
Our urgent task as citizens is to restore the Constitution by deliberative engagement against those who have mauled it by creating an American Empire driven by an extra-constitutional, lawless, imperial presidency. ....

Fifty Years Later, Remembering the Activities of the "Citizens' Commission to Investigate the FBI"

Aired on Friday, March 12th.
Fifty years ago, in March of 1971, a group of activists calling itself the Citizens Commission to Investigate the FBI broke into a small FBI office in Pennsylvania and stole more than 1,000 classified documents. They then anonymously mailed the documents to several U.S. newspapers, thereby exposing numerous illegal FBI operations vis a vis domestic surveillance. On this edition of ST, we revisit our 2014 conversation with Betty Medsger, a former Washington Post journalist who wrote a book detailing this incident. That book is The Burglary: The Discovery of J. Edgar Hoover s Secret FBI. And as per a critic writing for Booklist: In 1971, somebody burgled an FBI office in Pennsylvania, stole secret files, and sent them to journalists. One of the recipients, Medsger revisits the story because she has discovered who the burglars were (the FBI never identified them). Organized by a college teacher, they were a small group of academics and students ....

COVID-1984 ALERT: NJ Mayor Will Deploy Flying Drones to Police Social Distancing

(AP Photo/Keith Srakocic, File)
Way back in February of 2020, we were treated to reports that China was using drones to police for social distancing violations.
A disturbingly enthusiastic article at Forbes called it ” the biggest and boldest experiment in population monitoring and control the world has ever seen.”
Well, Xi Jinping and his Chinese Communist Party cohorts ain’t got nothing on Elizabeth, New Jersey mayor, Chris Bollwage, who’s announced that he plans on following suit.
Nor does Forbes Magazine have anything on whatever coterie of wretched imbeciles comprises the editorial board of the New Jersey Star-Ledger in their enthusiasm for totalitarianism. ....

Surveillance State: British Police Deploying Drones to Monitor Protest

16 Feb 2021
British police have begun employing drones to monitor political protests throughout the country, as campaigners warn that the increasingly heavy-handed tactics employed by the police may be used to “silence dissent”.
A freedom of information request from the UK Drone Watch campaign group found that police across the country have begun using drones to surveil protests.
Police forces in Surrey, Cleveland, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire and West Midlands, as well as the Devon and Cornwall and Avon and Somerset forces, were all found to have used drones during protests,
The Guardianreported.
Protesters monitored by the police with drones included anti-lockdown, Black Lives Matter, Extinction Rebellion activists as well as one so-called ‘extreme-right protest’. ....

How DJI and Draganfly tried to use the pandemic to get law enforcement to use more drones.

In April, as COVID-19 cases exploded across the U.S. and local officials scrambled for solutions, a police department in Connecticut tried a new way to monitor the spread of the virus. One morning, as masked shoppers lined up 6 feet apart outside Trader Joe’s in Westport, the police department flew a drone overhead to observe their social distancing and detect potential coronavirus symptoms, such as high temperature and increased heart rate.
According to internal emails, the captain flying the mission wanted to “take advantage” of the store’s line. But the store had no heads-up about the flight, and neither did the customers on their grocery runs, even though the drone technology managed to track figures both inside and outside. The drone program was unveiled a week later when the department announced its “Flatten the Curve Pilot Program” in collaboration with the Canadian drone company Draganfly, which was due to last through the summer. ....
