On May 19, one month will pass since the United States revoked its suspension of sanctions against several Belarusian public companies, mostly from the petrochemical industry (BelTA, April 20;
State.gov, April 19). Despite the 45-day wind-down period established, it seems that the resuming restrictions have already had tangible results. Reportedly, both crude oil supplies to Belarus’s Naftan refinery and Belarusian oil product exports may be in jeopardy. Nonetheless, it is still too early to assess what the long-term outcome of the sanctions may be for Belarus and the wider region. ....

Much of the world's solar panel production relies on forced labor in China

China s Xinjiang region has evolved over the past two decades into a major production hub for many of the companies that supply the world with parts needed to build solar panels. But new research suggests that much of that work could rely on the exploitation of the region s Uyghur population and other ethnic and religious minorities, potentially tainting a significant portion of the global supply chain for a renewable energy source critical to combating the climate crisis.
The report published Friday titled In Broad Daylight: Uyghur Forced Labor and Global Solar Supply Chains presents evidence of a troubling reality: that components for clean energy may be created with dirty coal and forced labor. An advance copy of the report was shared exclusively with CNN Business. China has repeatedly denied all allegations of human rights abuses in Xinjiang. ....

Joe Biden’s administration appears to favor maintaining the previous administration’s prohibitions on investments in companies linked to the Chinese military
Bloomberg
US President Joe Biden’s administration is likely to maintain pressure on China by preserving limits on US investments in certain Chinese companies imposed under former US president Donald Trump, six people familiar with the matter said, bucking entreaties from analysts to ease the restrictions.
Biden officials are still in preliminary discussions about Trump’s investment bans on companies linked to China’s military, which included three of the nation’s biggest telecommunications firms, the people said. ....

Russian oil firms may stop supplying Belarus refinery over U.S. sanctions - sources

3 Min Read
MOSCOW, April 27 (Reuters) - Russian oil exporters may suspend supplies to Belarus’s Naftan refinery after the United States tightened sanctions on Belarus over alleged human rights violations and abuses, four sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.
Washington last week revoked authorisations for certain U.S. transactions with nine sanctioned Belarusian state-owned enterprises, including Naftan and its owner Belneftekhim.
While not directly affected by the move, Russian companies are concerned they could be penalised if they continue dealing with the Belarusian businesses.
Apart from loans, Russia supports its neighbour and fellow former member of the Soviet Union with oil supplies on beneficial terms. ....
