The vast majority of the prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay detention center have reportedly received the first dose of the vaccine against the Chinese coronavirus after the U.S. military began offering it early this week.
Of the 40 detainees held at the U.S. military prison, 32 had received the first dose of the two-shot Moderna vaccine as of Tuesday, U.S. Southern Command said, without explaining why the eight remaining men had not received the drug, the Associated Press (AP) reported Tuesday.
U.S. Southern Command, or SOUTHCOM, oversees the American military base in Guantanamo, Cuba.
There is no requirement to inoculate the detainees at the prison, commonly known as Gitmo. ....

WASHINGTON A once-secret unit within the Guantanamo Bay detention center that had fallen into disrepair has been closed and the prisoners moved to another facility on the American base in Cuba, the U.S. military said Sunday.
The prisoners at Camp 7 were transferred to a facility adjacent to where the other detainees on the base are held as part of what U.S. Southern Command said in a statement was an effort to “increase operational efficiency and effectiveness.” ....

WASHINGTON The head of U.S. Southern Command on Tuesday appeared to find a receptive audience to his requests for greater intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities in the next budget.
Adm. Craig Faller, who will retire as the SOUTHCOM chief later this year, told members of the Senate Armed Services Committee that his command receives less than 1 percent of the Pentagon’s ISR capabilities.
While he acknowledged that every combatant command wants more ISR, Faller said he can only meet 20 percent of his current ISR needs, with the majority of that supplied through a partnership with Customs and Border Patrol, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security. ....

A former 1st Cavalry Division deputy commander and current commander of U.S. Army North was nominated by President Joe Biden on Monday for a new command.
Lt. Gen. Laura J. Richardson was nominated for a fourth star and to take over U.S. Southern Command, which has responsibility for Central and South America.
Richardson was the first female 1st Cavalry deputy commander from 2012-2013, and was a brigadier general at the time.
