With backing of unions, Pennsylvania public universities to slash over 1,500 jobs

With backing of unions, Pennsylvania public universities to slash over 1,500 jobs
The Board of Governors and chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) is moving forward with a restructuring plan that will merge six universities into two. The result will be the slashing of thousands of jobs and the erosion of the quality of education, even as tuition continues to rise.
PASSHE consists of 14 public universities across the state, enrolling over 95,000 students and employing over 11,000 workers and faculty. It ranks 48th in the nation in terms of public expenditure on higher education.

Nearly 4,800 people have accumulated $17.9 million in unpaid student fees owed to one of the 14 state-owned universities and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology.
For decades, efforts to get them to pay up the fees that universities charge alongside tuition, such as an activity fee or technology fee, resulted in for-profit collection agents coming after them. But no more. ....

Erie County Council primary election: 7 Dems, 3 GOP running for 3 seats

Lifting Erie County families from the economic shock of COVID-19 and into a new, post-pandemic future   will likely be the biggest challenge for the next County Council.

In the 2nd District, Democratic incumbent Andre Horton is running unopposed  both in the May 18 primary and Nov. 2 general election  making his reelection a guarantee.
However, Council Chairman Carl Anderson, a Democrat, is running for county executive, leaving his 4th District seat up for grabs.  ....

The state House debated a plan Tuesday that would merge six of Pennsylvania’s state universities into two regional schools.
The plan would combine two sets of schools within the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). Lock Haven, Mansfield, and Bloomsburg Universities would join together in the northeastern region, as would three western schools: Clarion University, Edinboro University, and California University of Pennsylvania. The moves would not affect the other three state system schools in the midstate Kutztown, Millersville, and Shippensburg.
