The board of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education voted Wednesday to advance a plan to merge six of its 14 universities into two new institutions, as the system struggles with sinking enrollment and stagnant state aid.Watch the report in the video player above.The nearly unanimous vote from the board of governors launches a 60-day public comment period. A final vote could be scheduled for July, with implementation in time for the 2022-23 school year. This is not approving plans as is, board chair Cindy Shapiro said at the close of the two-hour online meeting. This is saying, We are at a point where we can continue to move forward, not go back to the drawing board, unless somehow out of public comment that appears to be the best solution. Under the consolidation plans, Bloomsburg, Mansfield and Lock Haven universities in northern Pennsylvania would merge into one institution ....

PENNSYLVANIA Plans advanced Wednesday to advance the consolidation of six of Pennsylvania s 14 state universities. The State System of Higher Education voted to move ahead with merging California, Clarion and Edinboro universities in the western part of the state and Bloomsburg, Lock Haven and Mansfield in the eastern portion.
The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education approved a 60-day comment period on the consolidation plan. Public hearings on the proposal will be held via Zoom on June 9 and 10. Depending on public reaction, final approval could occur this summer, with the changes being implemented in the 2022-23 school year. ....

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Pa.
UPDATE: On Wednesday, the Board of Governors for Pennsylvania s State System of Higher Education approved today two plans to restructure six universities into two combinations of three. The integrated institutions would be California, Clarion, and Edinboro Universities in the western part of the state, and Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield Universities in the northeastern region.
A 60-day public comment period will now take place. Those who wish to read the plans can do so by clicking here. Two virtual public hearings are scheduled for June 9 and 10. ....

A late Tuesday night incident has left two people dead on the South Side of Easton. Police were called to the Canal Park Apartments around 11:30 last night and when they arrived they found a man and a woman dead and another woman with a gunshot wound to the leg. Police say that woman was in a neighboring apartment and was hit when a bullet went through the wall. DA Terence Houck says police are not looking for anybody else who may have been involved in the incident and there s no danger to the public.
Pennsylvania health officials say that 48-percent of Pennsylvanians have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The state is ranked 10th in the nation for percent of population with at least one dose. State health officials aim to have 80-percent of Pennsylvanians vaccinated to reach herd immunity. ....
