Farrell, latest candidate for Congress in NY-21, talks past with Child Victims Act, district focuses

NORTH RIVER — Brigid “Bridie” Farrell, the former U.S. national team speedskater who advocated for passage of the Child Victims Act in New York and across the country, said she wants to offer bipartisan, real-world solutions if she makes it to Congress. Ms. Farrell, a 39-year-old Democrat from North River, announced her campaign for Congress in New York’s 21st Congressional District on Wednesday. In an interview Thursday, Ms. Farrell said her work on the Child Victims Act, which passed in New York in 2019, taught her a lot about legislative responsibilities. “I learned that bipartisan legislation is absolutely possible, and at the end of the day we might be called Republicans and Democrats, but we’re just people,” she said. “We’re humans, we’re talking about human lives and issues.”

Third Democrat announces candidacy for Congress in NY-21

NORTH RIVER — Former U.S. speedskater and child victims advocate Brigid “Bridie” Farrell is running for Congress in New York’s 21st Congressional District. In a video posted to Twitter on Wednesday morning, Ms. Farrell, a Democrat, announced her plan to unseat Rep. Elise M. Stefanik, R-Schuylerville. “I cannot be bought, I won’t divide people for political gain,” Ms. Farrell said in her announcement video over images of news coverage of Rep. Stefanik. “I will never forget the people I’ve been elected to represent.” Ms. Farrell said she is a north country native, born in Saratoga and now a resident of North River in Warren County.

Stefanik handily outraises all other NY-21 candidates

New campaign finance records show Rep. Elise M. Stefanik has again massively outraised her opposition in the race for the NY-21 House of Representatives seat. According to financial records released July 15, Rep. Stefanik, R-Schuylerville, took in $1,139,643 in individual contributions alone in the quarter covering April 1 to June 30, for a total of $1,246,920 in total contributions to her campaign. That marks a record for any north country congressional candidate’s campaign income in a non-election year. About $1,139,643 was donated by more than 25,000 individuals to Rep. Stefanik in the last quarter, with 10,000 being first-time donors and an average donation of $29. Rep. Stefanik raised more than $850,000 in total from small-dollar donors in the last quarter.

Elise Stefanik of the North Country is no political push over. The four-term incumbent has won all her races by double digits. Her latest financial disclosures show she has more than $2.1 million to spend on securing another term in office. National stardom offers plenty of options for raising more while also providing a level of name recognition that is hard to beat. Yet, her yearslong drift towards the far right could become her undoing – or so goes the hopes of a growing list of Democrats hoping to unseat her next year.
