There were plenty of guffaws recently when President Trump invoked the notion of “herd mentality” in the fight against the pandemic.
What he meant, of course, was herd “immunity,” but his malapropism wasn’t entirely off base.
It turns out herd “mentality” is flourishing, especially among the pachyderms that dominate Oklahoma state government.
Attorney General Mike Hunter and nearly two-thirds of House Republicans shamed themselves by sticking their noses into a specious legal effort to overturn the presidential election results in Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. ....

SCOTUS Hears Arguments in CIC Servs. LLC v. Internal Revenue Service

Thursday, December 17, 2020
On December 1, 2020, the United States Supreme Court heard oral arguments in
CIC Servs. LLC v. Internal Revenue Service, a case challenging the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) reporting requirements around certain transactions involving captive insurance companies that elect to be taxed under § 831(b) of the Internal Revenue Code (referred to as “micro-captives”).
Background
The IRS has established requirements for certain taxpayers, as well as their advisors, to maintain specific records and submit reports to the IRS relating to any reportable transactions, i.e., a transaction the IRS believes has the potential for tax avoidance or evasion. Reportable transactions are different from “listed transactions,” which are transactions the IRS deems to be unlawful tax avoidance mechanisms. ....

Supreme Court sides with churches challenging COVID-19 worship restrictions in Colorado, New Jersey -- Society's Child -- Sott.net

Robinson v. Murphy
vacating an order from Oct. 2 by a district court in New Jersey against a Catholic priest and a Jewish rabbi who sued the state over worship gathering restrictions.
Also on Tuesday, the high court issued a separate order in the case of
High Plains Harvest Church v. Polis, in which a Colorado church challenged the restrictions in that state.
The Supreme Court vacated an Aug. 10 order by a Colorado district court against High Plains Harvest Church, although with this order Justice Elena Kagan dissented.
I respectfully dissent because this case is moot. High Plains Harvest Church has sought to enjoin Colorado s capacity limits on worship services. But Colorado has lifted all those limits, wrote Kagan, being joined by Justices Stephen Breyer and Sonia Sotomayor. ....

The Arizona Republican Party continues to deny President-elect Joe Biden s win in the Grand Canyon state, even after its 11 electors for Biden cast their ballots and sent the certification to Congress on Dec. 14.
As a result, a divide is widening between the activist, right-leaning faction and the establishment moderates in the state s GOP amid baseless accusations of election fraud by some Republicans and Trump allies accusations which have been dismissed by judges in several court cases. ....
