According to a 50-state survey among adults under 40, one in 10 of them don’t remember ever hearing the word “Holocaust,” where 6 million Jews were killed in World War II. Among them were Curt and Regina Schönwald whose son and grandsons lived in Lincoln. Lincoln High School is performing a play based on the family’s experience. ....

Rutgers Jewish Fraternity Vandalized During Yom HaShoah Program

The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s office is investigating a prank perpetrated on a Jewish fraternity house on Rutgers University’s New Brunswick campus during a Yom HaShoah program as a bias incident. The university community and administration have widely condemned the building being “egged,” apparently anti-Semitic act.
There were no eyewitnesses. Rutgers police, which is investigating, confirmed there is no security footage of the vandalism at the Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi) fraternity house on Sicard Street.
The incident occurred during a 24-hour reading of the names of Holocaust victims and was first reported in the student newspaper, the Daily Targum. It drew a swift response from other students and university officials. ....

During coverage of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, I spotted a man wearing a “Camp Auschwitz” sweatshirt. My nails digging into my palms, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing any more than I could understand how 48% of U.S. adults under 40 could not name one concentration camp, including Auschwitz.
I knew the name of the camp well. My father, before his death last fall, was one of fewer than 2,000 Auschwitz survivors worldwide. A few weeks after his 94th birthday, I opened my laptop and watched him disclose the secrets of his childhood I’d waited decades to hear. ....
