How money and global exposure are changing the face of Byron Bay

There is no way to tell the story of a place as beautiful, fractious, mocked, stereotyped and beloved as Byron Bay, unless you admit, firstly, that everyone will have their own version.
You fell in love here, married here, gave birth here. You came to get well, or die here. Your life fell apart here. You wrote your book here, or spent years
pretending to do so. You danced till dawn in the hills, learnt to surf on those perfectly formed point breaks. You kayaked with dolphins and sea turtles; you heard the migratory humpback whales singing their way up the coast, long after their parents and grandparents had been harpooned, their throats cut, then shipped to the slaughterhouse to be processed into margarine.

Named after the author of
My Brilliant Career and established by her bequest, the annual Miles Franklin Literary Award is one of Australia’s most prestigious, valuable and popular fiction prizes.
So what does it take to call yourself a Miles Franklin winner? We’ve crunched the data on every winner since the first in 1957, ahead of the announcement of this year’s award on Thursday afternoon.
Be a man
Twice as many men have won the Miles Franklin Literary Award, with men writing 41 of the winning novels and women writing 21 of them. However, the tide may be turning. Eight of the 21 women on the list have won in the past nine years.

Recent acquisition highlights - December 2018

CBRLife = 堪 生 活  is now being received through legal deposit. Published by a group of young Chinese Australians, it is a ‘magazine for Chinese Australians living in Canberra, recording their lives and memories with connection of this City .
While many multicultural publishers are pleased to deposit their works with the Library, others can be less responsive to the Library’s standard ‘official’ approach. There was a good example recently with the acquisition of three volumes of
Aodaliya hua ren nian jian = Yearbook of Chinese in Australia, which we believe to be the first Chinese language yearbooks published in Australia. The acquisition was achieved indirectly, as the publisher did not respond to direct approaches requesting deposit. One of the Library’s volunteers made contact with the editor via his personal network, at which point the volumes were deposited. In these situations, the ‘community-based’ collecting approach is liable to be more successful, and applies in a multitude of other situations as we.
