San Francisco overdose deaths far outpaced COVID-19 deaths in 2020

preliminary data released by the city’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner reveals.
A total of 713 San Franciscans died from drug overdoses in 2020 compared to 255 who died from the coronavirus.
The city reported 35,746 positive coronavirus cases out of a population of more than 883,000 people. The data excludes the number of COVID-19-related recoveries, the city states, noting, “People recover from COVID-19 in many different settings including their own homes, residential facilities, and hospitals, and recovery from the illness is not routinely reported back to the Department of Public Health.”
The majority of overdose deaths primarily involved fentanyl, followed by methamphetamine and cocaine. The majority who died from overdosing, 88%, were Caucasian men, followed by Latinx men, and between the ages of 55 and 64. The majority had fixed addresses, whereas 29% had no fixed address and appeared to be homeless. ....

Michigan is reporting its second consecutive year of decreasing drug overdose deaths overall.
That s the good news. However, there is at least a 16% increase in overdose deaths from January through June of 2020 compared to that time in 2019, preliminary data says.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) announced Thursday that out of 2,354 overdose deaths in 2019, 75%, or 1,768 were opioid-related.
Overall overdose deaths declined in 2019 by 9.4% from the 2,599 in 2018 – below 2016 numbers.
Opioid-related overdose deaths decreased in 2019 by 13.2% from 2018’s total of 2,036.
However, preliminary data from January through June of 2020 show 1,340 overdose deaths – a 185 death, or 16% increase from that period in 2019. Similarly, opioid-related overdose deaths in 2020 increased by 171, or 20% ti 1,04 ....

Lawmakers on Wednesday discussed ways to remove barriers to accessing treatment for substance use disorder during a hearing of the Health Subcommittee for the Committee on Energy and Commerce.
From eliminating the training requirements for buprenorphine prescribing, to take-home doses of methadone, there was no shortage of ideas, albeit controversial ones.
The subcommittee also examined the two-track response to dealing with opioids that seems to diverge based on race and ZIP code.
Subcommittee Chair Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.) explained that the need to resolve access and equity issues could not be more urgent, noting that overdose deaths spiked after the start of the pandemic, and culminated in over 88,000 deaths in the 12 months leading up to August 2020 making last year the deadliest year for overdoses on record. ....
