New Denver Restaurants and Closings This Week

When the Pour House Pub closed at 1435 Market Street last year, it looked like the closure was permanent. And all hope seemed lost for the Boston sports fans who congregated there when signs went up announcing the imminent arrival of Nola Jane, a new Cajun-themed restaurant and bar. But hope never dies for Red Sox, Patriots and Bruins fans, and the Pour House has miraculously returned across the street, and with a slightly different name. It s now Pour House on Market, but you ll still find some of the same sports memorabilia and many of the same faces behind its multiple bars, since it s now owned by two former managers, according to ....

State and Federal Assistance Come for Hard-Hit Colorado Restaurants

On March 11, President Joe Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act, creating relief programs and direct funds for individuals and businesses hit hard by the pandemic. Restaurants were specifically targeted this time (unlike in the CARES Act of 2020), with $28.6 billion allocated to the Restaurant Revitalization Fund. The fund, which will take the form of various-sized grants to chains as well as independent restaurants, comes at a time when the State of Colorado is also looking to make additional money available to small businesses.
On March 10, Governor Jared Polis held a press conference with a bipartisan group of Colorado legislators and business owners to announce that $700 million is being made available for a proposed stimulus package called the Colorado Recovery Plan. Polis said that the money is available in the budget now because last year we were prepared for worse, and officials were expecting greater devastation to the state budget. ....

Colorado Chefs Make it to Beat Bobby Flay and Top Chef

Our favorite chefs in Denver and beyond have been hiding out over the past year behind masks and in kitchens turning more to-go meals. But chefs are often the face of restaurants, so it s great to see them in action, even if we have to turn on the TV instead of grabbing a chef s-counter seat to watch the action.
Two Colorado chefs will be coming to your living room to show off their talents one of them tonight. Sarah Cloyd, executive chef at Steuben s Arvada (at 7355 Ralston Road), is dueling celebrity chef Bobby Flay on his Food Network show,
Beat Bobby Flay. Cloyd has been with Steuben s for the past year, but the episode was filmed in late 2019, when she was still working at Euclid Hall (which closed in March 2020). ....

Bakery Four to Move From West Highland to Tennyson Street

Courtesy of the Berkeley Hotel
Bakery Four currently offers only one kind of sourdough bread, plus croissants, pain au chocolat, morning buns, cardamom buns and cruffins (a croissant-muffin hybrid filled with pastry cream). Bergin uses stoneground wheat grown on small farms, creating baked goods with rich flavor and plenty of nutrition. The baker says he ll be able to increase production to about 100 loaves a day, and in a bigger variety, and will be able to double his pastry production. With more baking, sandwich making and coffee service, the bakery will also be hiring more employees, up from just Bergin, his assistant baker and his wife, Alex Urdanick. ....

Irish Pubs Attempt 2021 Comeback After 2020 St. Patrick's Day Cancellation

The luck of the Irish ran out last year on St. Patrick s Day, normally one of the busiest times for bars and pubs. March 17, 2020, was the first day of a two-month-plus-long COVID-based lockdown in Colorado, which closed restaurants to in-house dining and made bars that couldn t come up with some way to serve food strictly verboten. Just a few days earlier, Denver s annual St. Patrick s Day Parade had been canceled, though incautious revelers still packed bars in trendy neighborhoods that weekend (since social distancing and group- gathering rules hadn t yet been imposed in the state).
A year later, with most Denver restaurants now operating at Level Blue on the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment s dial dashboard, Irish pubs are making plans to douse the city in kelly green but with an eye to public health and safety. Bars with no food service are still closed, but most have figured out ways to provide good grub to customers and meet state requirements. ....
