Pro-social activities prevents child abuse, strengthens family


Preventing child maltreatment takes many forms, some more obvious than others. Pro-social activities fall in the category of protective factors that may not be so apparent. But pro-social activities, actions that help others, such as volunteering or lending a hand to a neighbor, strengthen families. And child abuse is less likely in strong families.
Besides helping others, pro-social activities benefit the helper, too, by increasing moods, social connectedness and decreasing stress levels. 
All of these positives, indirectly, help prevent child abuse. Pro-social activities open doors and create different understandings of what is possible. And it doesn’t hurt to get out of the house and spend time with other caring individuals.  ....

Retired Masterton businessman and newspaper columnist Rick Long vividly remembers the day he met Prince Philip in Masterton on a hot summer day over 67 years ago.
The then-13-year-old Long, now 80, was one of a group of Boy Scouts chosen to stand front and centre to welcome the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh when they spent the day in town on Friday, January 15, 1954.
Although a photo of the occasion - including the prince and Long - had appeared in the Auckland Weekly, Long had never seen it. ....

In the U.S. April 12th is National Grilled Cheese Day. Crispy bread and melted cheese, how can something so simple be so delicious?  This was my absolute favorite sandwich as a kid, the type of bread and cheese made no difference, although my Mom usually used American cheese on Wonder Bread. For me, this was the ultimate comfort food and paired with a bowl of hot soup I could dip it in, it was nirvana. 
Confession time. Even though I have upgraded my taste in cheeses and bread, this is still my comfort food of choice. And if I am being perfectly honest, the very meltable American cheese is a hit. I do prefer a good sourdough or rye bread, but wheat will do as well.  ....
