California Gov. Gavin Newsom has embraced Silicon Valley tech companies and health care industry titans in response to the covid-19 pandemic like no other governor in America routinely outsourcing life-or-death public health duties to his allies in the private sector.
At least 30 tech and health care companies have received lucrative, no-bid government contracts, or helped fund and carry out critical public health activities during the state s battle against the coronavirus, a KHN analysis has found. The vast majority are Newsom supporters and donors who have contributed more than $113 million to his political campaigns and charitable causes, or to fund his policy initiatives, since his first run for statewide office in 2010. ....

COVID news: Disneyland reopens; young adult cases rise; India outbreak


One hundred million Americans have received their second of two shots or a one-shot vaccine, representing significant progress in the fight against COVID-19, White House officials said Friday.
That s 100 million Americans with a sense of relief and peace of mind, knowing that after a long and hard year, they re protected from the virus, White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator Jeff Zients said.
Zients said the next phase of the nation s vaccine program will focus on harder-to-reach Americans. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy emphasized the need to combat vaccine hesitancy and build confidence in vaccines.
This is one of these all-hands-on-deck moments, Murthy said, adding vaccinated people should encourage their family and friends to do so, too. ....
