Mixed reactions from Bay Area educators on Newsom's reopening plan announcement

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) California s public schools could tap into $6.6 billion from the Legislature if they return to in-person instruction by the end of March, according to a new agreement announced Monday between Gov. Gavin Newsom and the state s legislative leaders.
The reaction to Newsom s schools reopening plan is decidedly mixed among Bay Area educators.
In Oakland, where some parents are demanding reopening and the district has yet to reach agreements with its labor unions, the Oakland Education Association was not particularly impressed with Newsom s announcement.
In terms of being helpful, not so much, said Chaz Garcia, 2nd Vice-President of the Oakland Education Association. It generally creates panic, because usually there s a lot of jargon in there folks don t clearly understand. ....

San Jose small businesses hit hard by COVID-19 hope for Lunar New Year boost

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) As the community comes together to usher in the Year of the Ox, many Asian American-owned businesses in San Jose s Little Saigon neighborhood are hopeful that better days are ahead.
It s hard to see businesses suffering, said Dublin resident Lanthy Le. New Year s is not the same anymore due to COVID. it s tough.
Friday afternoon, Le was among a small group of shoppers at Grand Century Mall, which has become an unofficial gathering place, as one of America s largest Vietnamese-focused malls. In normal times, thousands from all over Northern California would visit for Lunar New Year festivities and celebrations. Southern California regional stay-at-home order lifted, but some local restaurants remain apprehensive about reopening

After Gov. Gavin Newsom lifted the state stay-at-home orders, Los Angeles County says outdoor dining at restaurants can resume starting Friday.
Restaurants can open outdoor service starting this Friday. L.A. County health leaders announced that the region will align with the state s decision to relax restrictions. But not everyone is ready to get back to work after eight weeks of being shut down.
Some are feeling a little leery about getting out in the public. They ve been isolated for so long. Some are ready to go as soon as we can let them know, they ll be here that next morning, they re very excited. And then a few will not be coming back. That s their words to me. I m just not going to do it. It s been too hard on them, and too hard on everybody for too long, Roen said. ....

“Amid signs of improving COVID-19 conditions in California, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) lifted statewide stay-at-home orders Monday, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) said.
“The move allows restaurants to open for outdoor dining options and salons to resume indoor appointments. Outdoor church services are also permitted. Reopening options apply to regions including the San Francisco Bay Area, Central Valley and Southern California and marks the first reopening opportunity since December.
“The state will now revert to a county tier system, which eases lockdowns depending on case rates and gives local officials the option to set their own restrictions, KCRA reports.” ....
