Reps. Bass, Carson, Omar, Tlaib Introduce 'Muslim American Heritage Month' Resolution

Rep.
Karen Bass (D-Calif.) led introduction of a resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives to recognize July as
Muslim American Heritage Month, honoring their contributions throughout our country’s history. The legislation was introduced after a constituent and local Los Angeles community organizer raised the idea of such a designation. Following introduction, the primary authors joined in issuing statements in support of the resolution.
“I’m proud to join my House colleagues in introducing this legislation to acknowledge and appreciate the numerous contributions and achievements of Muslim Americans – both throughout history and today,” said Rep Bass. “We must also recognize and address the persistent discrimination and bigotry Muslim Americans have faced and continue to face in this country. This July, and all year long, we commit ourselves to combating prejudice and doing all we can to support Muslim American communities in California and across our nation.

San Diego County Supervisors vote 3-2 to provide immigrants taxpayer funded representation -

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The San Diego County Board of Supervisors has voted 3-2 in favor of a program that will provide taxpayer funded legal representation for immigrants facing removal proceedings.
Supervisors voted after a lengthy public hearing, with many calling in to support Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer’s proposal, while opponents question why taxpayer dollars should be used in this way.
Lawson-Remer is championing the vote, claiming “Due Process for All,” is an obligation for San Diego County.
Democrat Congressman Juan Vargas issued a statement in support saying, “by providing legal representation to individuals in immigration proceedings who cannot afford an attorney, we protect the widely shared American values of due process and fairness.”

BRAWLEY — A Superior Court jury on Friday found Imperial County Office of Education Trustee Annette Gonzalez-Buttner guilty on all four felony counts she faced.
She has been convicted of two counts of perjury, one count of grand theft and a violation of state election law, all tied to a false declaration of residency in 2017 when she was filing her candidacy on the ICOE board.
Sentencing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. May 27 at the Brawley Superior courthouse.
The verdict was announced Friday morning after almost two days of jury deliberation.
The jury agreed Gonzalez-Buttner was actually living in Santa Clara when she filed her 2017 candidate paperwork, but listed her domicile as her father’s home in Calexico (an apartment at the Calexico Gardens Apartments on Rockwood Avenue).
