WASHINGTON - Peninsula Congresswoman Jackie Speier, no stranger to trauma and violence, described the moments leading up to and during the pro-Trump riots as she watched her colleagues debate the electoral college votes on the House floor.
Speier, a Democrat representing San Francisco and San Mateo, said she noticed something was off when she saw House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the majority whip being escorted out of the room on Wednesday morning. Moments later, she and other members of Congress were told that the Capitol had been breached. ....

Congresswomen Anna Eshoo, D-Palo Alto, and Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo, had to flee to undisclosed locations yesterday (Jan. 6) when a riot erupted at the Capitol.
Before getting to the Capitol yesterday, Eshoo had a “bad feeling” because of the increased police patrols and Trump supporters who were spotted along D.C. streets. As Eshoo was walking chaos began and she was told to turn around and leave.
Meanwhile, Speier was in the chambers and tweeted that Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer were escorted out. ....

A year earlier, Jim Jones, pastor of San Francisco’s “People’s Temple” and pal of the city’s Democratic politicians had lured most members of his congregation to a compound called Jonestown in the jungles of Guyana. On Nov. 18, 1978, after a visit by Congressman Leo Ryan (murdered upon his departure) threatened to expose horrific conditions at the site, the charismatic Jones convinced his followers to commit mass suicide. Over 900 perished, one-third of them children, after dutifully lining up and drinking cyanide-laced Kool-Aid. ....
