Rhode Island to lift pandemic restrictions by Memorial Day

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) Rhode Island is loosening its pandemic-related economic restrictions in time for Memorial Day weekend in May.
Democratic Gov. Dan McKee said Thursday that he plans to phase out regulations on mask-wearing, social distancing and capacity in certain locations that have been in place in some form for more than a year.
Starting May 7, he said, people will not be required to wear masks while outdoors and businesses will be able to increase their capacity to 80%, so long as people are spaced at least 3 feet (1 meter) apart. ....

Rhode Islanders who are 60 to 64 years of age and those 16 and older with specific underlying health conditions will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine starting Friday.
Rhode Island residents ages 16 to 64 are eligible to be vaccinated if they have medical conditions such as type 1or type 2 diabetes; lung disease, heart disease or kidney disease or weakened immune systems due to pregnancy, cancer, HIV/AIDS or other medical issues. (See the Health Department’s full list of qualifying medical conditions.)
Residents who are 16 and 17 are only eligible to receive Pfizer vaccine. ....

Inside a storefront health clinic in a Price Rite shopping plaza in Providence, the regulars are mostly immigrants who speak Spanish, Portuguese and Creole. They work cleaning offices, washing cars and fileting fish in grocery stores.
And nearly one in four of the patients last month tested positive for the coronavirus, said Dr. Annie De Groot, the volunteer medical director at the nonprofit Clinica Esperanza, or Hope Clinic.
“A lot of our patients have been waiting for the vaccine and dying before they got the vaccine,’’ De Groot said. “So we kind of would like to be able to vaccinate our population.” ....

Montgomery: Hospitals support an extension of a statewide face mask order, at least until more people become vaccinated against COVID-19, the head of the Alabama Hospital Association said Monday. Gov. Kay Ivey is expected to announce this week whether she will extend the face covering mandate and other health orders that are set to expire Friday. A spokeswoman for the governor expressed optimism about state coronavirus numbers. “All along, Gov. Ivey has made clear that she prefers personal responsibility to government mandates. We are optimistic that our state is heading in the right direction, and we still have some work to be done,” Gina Maiola said Monday. Alabama, like much of the nation, has seen a significant drop in daily COVID-19 cases, but medical officials cautioned that the virus has not gone away, and uncertainty remains about the impact of emerging variants and upcoming events like spring break gatherings. ....
