“People are really excited about science. They feel like the scientific community is not excited about them, or welcoming to them, except sometimes using Black people for experiments,” says Chanda Prescod-Weinstein.

Some of the most recognizable names in science are white men: Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, even Bill Nye. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein is one of the few Black women in astrophysics. She teaches at the University of New Hampshire, and she explores the intersection of science and race in her new book titled “The Disordered Cosmos: A Journey into Dark Matter, Spacetime, and Dreams Deferred.”

Plov Isn't Just a Rice Dish. It Contains Multitudes

The first time I tried plov, the oil-slicked meat and rice pilaf that is beloved throughout Central Asia, was at a homely kosher restaurant in Rego Park, Queens. Growing up eating blintzes, potato latkes, and other Eastern European Jewish dishes in suburban Chicago, I was equal parts surprised and thrilled to learn that New York City is home to tens of thousands of Bukharian Jewish immigrants hailing from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan—as well as the dishes from home they brought with them. Amongst the unfamiliar riches on the table that evening were grilled lamb-fat skewers, savory pumpkin pastries topped with nigella seeds, hand-pulled noodle soups, and fresh pickled salads. But the cumin-perfumed rice, which came spangled with glistening cubes of meltingly tender beef, was the unrivaled star.

First they came for the matzah ball soup, and I did not speak out — because I don’t eat matzah ball soup.
Then they came for the challah, and I did not speak out — because I don’t eat challah.
Then they came for the bagels…

I was surprised to see that bagels might originate in Arab cuisine. I always associate them with Eastern European Jewish origins. So tell me about the history of the Arab equivalent of the bagel.

6 Lessons I Learned From Ronald S. Lauder

. It was a summertime retreat for Polish Jewish survivors and their families. I continued to volunteer during college, my year as a Fulbright student living in Krakow, and during graduate school at Oxford. In 1998, Mr. Lauder hired my wife Rachel and me as directors of the RSL Foundation in Poland, where we served until Fall 2001. Here are a few of the many things I learned from Mr. Lauder working with him.
1. Make a Teacher for yourself
The first time I was in Mr. Lauder’s office was not for a scheduled meeting with Mr. Lauder, rather I was sent to meet his rabbi. Mr. Lauder, a titan of business and the art world, chairman of JNF and the head of the Conference of Presidents, created an office in his suite for an advisor, an elderly Polish-born chassidic rabbi named Chaskel Besser. Rabbi Besser, a retired businessman and Chairman of Agudath Israel’s Daf Yomi Commission, was one of the most respected elders of Jewish life in America. Rabbi Besser was a close confidant of Rabbi Mendel Menachem Scheerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Moshe Sherer, Co-Chairman of the Agudath Israel World Organization, and many other Jewish community and political leaders.

Proposed bill could make screening for breast cancer Nevada law

It became a when.
Her mother, a longtime teacher for the Washoe County School District, was five years into a nine-year battle with ovarian cancer when Bridges was genetically tested for mutations in two genes commonly called BRCA 1 and BRCA 2.
At first Bridges, now 35, didn’t want to know if she carried the mutated gene that meant there was a strong likelihood that, like her mother and grandmother, she would be diagnosed with cancer.
But as she helped her mom in and out of treatment and hospitals, Bridges knew she couldn’t fight like her mom had for so long.
