Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack is confirmed (again)

After a 92-7 vote, the former governor of Iowa will reprise his role heading up USDA.
Three weeks after a cakewalk of a confirmation hearing, Tom Vilsack was confirmed as President Biden’s Agriculture Secretary on Tuesday in a 92-7 vote, garnering support from both parties. Vermont Independent Bernie Sanders and Republicans Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, and Rand Paul were among those voting against his confirmation. Senators had scheduled twenty minutes to debate the nomination but no one spoke out against Secretary Vilsack on the floor. Democrats voted unanimously in favor of the former governor of Iowa.
Vilsack’s nomination drew sharp criticism from civil rights advocates and various food safety and progressive farm groups, though he ultimately won support from major players including the Farm Bureau and the National Farmers Union.  ....

Fresno Mayor-elect Jerry Dyer announces a fundraising campaign in April 2020 to support organizations such as the food bank during the coronavirus pandemic.
The pandemic has not been kind to Fresno, the poorest major city in California. The unemployment rate spiked above 10 percent and has stubbornly remained there. Violent crime has surged, as has homelessness. Tax revenue has plummeted as businesses have shuttered. Lines at food banks are filled with first-timers.
But as bad as it’s been, things could soon get worse: Having frozen hundreds of jobs last year, the city is now being forced to consider laying off 250 people, including police and firefighters, to close a $31 million budget shortfall. ....

Many Republican mayors and governors see coronavirus relief as a lifeline

Many Republican mayors and governors say federal aid is not a "blue-state bailout," but something that s needed to keep police on the beat, prevent battered Main Street businesses from going under, and help care for the growing ranks of the homeless and the hungry. ....

The origins of the filibuster—and how it came to exasperate the U.S. Senate

On March 8, 1960, students in New Orleans protest an attempt by U.S. senators to block passage of civil rights legislation through the use of a filibuster. The tactic which involves talking at length to prevent approval of a bill became notorious during the civil rights movement.
Appropriately, its name comes from a Dutch word for “pirate” because the filibuster is, in essence, a hijacking of debate in the U.S. Senate. It’s also one of the most controversial traditions in American politics. ....

Axios perpetuates #bothsides journalism in the midst of insanity

Many mainstream news organizations are genuinely struggling to come to terms with the current dynamic in Washington: an often feckless Democratic Party opposed by crazy and dangerous Republicans. It’s not an entirely new scenario, and has in fact been building since Newt Gingrich’s speakership in the mid-1990s. But it’s become acute since the Trump-inspired insurrection of Jan. 6 and the embrace of QAnon and sedition by large swaths of the GOP.
But while responsible journalists are trying to figure out how to navigate this reality, there’s another group that continues to embrace #bothsides-ism at its most mindless. At the center of this is Axios, which combines the politics-as-sports sensibility of Politico, whence it sprang, with bullet points and lots of boldface. ....
