The Immigration Project is taking a new holistic approach to services.
Traditionally, the project has offered legal services, but now has expanded offerings with a new Welcoming Center on Landmark Drive in Normal. Hannah Mesouani manages the center with two caseworkers.
“The journey to residency and citizenship is about
so much more than just paperwork, though that paperwork is absolutely vital,” said Mesouani.“It’s also about forging connections within the community and navigating the labyrinth of social services and agencies to actually get to the help that is on offer. It’s a whole marathon
before you can even begin the process, and we’re here to help alleviate some of those challenges.” ....

Constantina Navarrete grew up helping her father farm corn, beans and squash in southern Mexico.
She grew up poor, she said, and everyone around her had the same dream: to have a better life in the United States. She never dreamed she’d someday have her own business there.
Navarrete and her husband, Adolfo, own El Porton Taqueria in Bloomington. Navarette shared the story of their journey to the U.S. and their struggles to open the restaurant Tuesday night during “It’s All in the Salsa: Mexican Stories of McLean County.”
The virtual event was the first in a new speaker series from the McLean County Museum of History called “Breaking Bread in McLean County,” exploring what it means to be an immigrant through the lens of food. ....

'Remain in Mexico': Biden Administration Must Keep Promise to End Policy That Forces Migrants to Wait – InsuranceNewsNet

Jan. 29, 2021:
Two years ago today, the Trump administration subjected the first migrant to a callous and unlawful policy that risks asylum seekers lives by forcing them to wait in
Mexico for their
U.S. immigration court hearings, stranded in border towns under life-threatening conditions.
Stuck there, families sleep in tents that do little to protect them from the elements or crime. Others crowd together in grimy streets without blankets or pillows amidst this humanitarian crisis. Parents clutch their children tightly out of fear they could be kidnapped.
The Trump administration officially implemented the Migrant Protection Protocols, better known as the Remain in ....

Coalition Urges Congress Not to Expand Domestic Terrorism Charges

Coalition Urges Congress Not to Expand Domestic Terrorism Charges
151 Organizations Call on Congress to Oppose the Expansion of Terrorism-related Legal Authority
January 19, 2021
Dear Members of Congress:
On behalf of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights (The Leadership Conference), a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 220 national organizations to promote and protect civil and human rights in the United States, and the undersigned
151 organizations, we write to express our deep concern regarding proposed expansion of terrorism-related legal authority. We must meet the challenge of addressing white nationalist and far-right militia violence without causing further harm to communities already disproportionately impacted by the criminal-legal system. The Justice Department (DOJ), including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has over 50 terrorism-related statutes it can use to investigate and prosecute criminal conduct ....

Bloomington Council OKs Joining Welcoming America Program

Bloomington City Council meets remotely Jan. 11, 2021.
The Bloomington City Council on Monday overwhelmingly voted to join the Welcoming Network, a nonprofit group that prides itself on creating inclusive environments for immigrants through community engagement, job training and other initiatives.
The 7-0 vote, in favor of the membership in the Welcoming America Initiative, means Bloomington can actively promote “breaking barriers between the immigrant community and the rest of the population,” said Ward 2 council member Donna Boelen, who drafted the proposal.
Council members Jenn Carrillo, of Ward 6, and Jeff Crabill, of Ward 8, who have opposed joining Welcoming America saying it fails to protect the city’s immigrants from an overbearing federal system, were absent from Monday night’s meeting.  ....
