The GeoNet website says the 2.7 magnitude earthquake struck within 5km of Rotorua at 5.55am.
It was at a depth of 5km and resulted in light shaking the website says.
Residents having taken to social media describing being woken by the jolt.

Forsyth County: Douglas Guynes charged with child abuse

A Kernersville man is charged with child abuse after authorities accused him of physically assaulting and shaking his 8-week-old son, causing serious physical injury. The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office said evidence points to the infant being injured as a result of an assault by Douglas Guynes, 24.Guynes was arrested and charged with felony negligent child abuse causing serious physical injury, misdemeanor child abuse and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a child.Guynes is being held in custody at the Forsyth County Law Enforcement Detention Center in lieu of $20,000 bail. His preliminary court date is set for Thursday, March 25. ....

In 1900, Alaska was home to Native people in scattered villages and camps and recently arrived miners who scraped the creeks for gold. Many of the 60,000 souls on the rivers and hills of Alaska stumbled through a big shake that fall, especially those living on Kodiak Island.
The largest earthquake on the planet that year happened somewhere near Kodiak on Oct. 9, 1900. Scientists know it was big, but how big? And could it happen again?
Seismologist Carl Tape wanted to know more about the great 1900 earthquake. He works at UAF’s Geophysical Institute, studying Alaska earthquakes and what causes them. He became interested in the 1900 earthquake because he suspected it was a big one, maybe a magnitude 8. ....
