Veteran's family pleads for bill's signature | State News

Briana Pechacek wants all New York veteran families to be eligible for programs meant to help the loved ones of deceased or disabled service members — just like her father.
U.S. Army Sgt. Steve Pechacek, of Ghent, sustained serious, life-altering leg and spinal injuries during live-fire combat training in South Korea in the early 1980s.
Pechacek, 57, is a severely disabled veteran, but unless a bill becomes law, his children are ineligible for the Military Enhanced Recognition Incentive and Tribute, or MERIT, scholarship intended for the children, spouses or financial dependents of American service members who died or became permanently disabled. ....

Tax credit to preserve historic barns

LIVINGSTON — Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s signature is the last thing officials need to create a state tax credit to help property owners restore thousands of historic barns throughout rural and Upstate New York.
A bill sponsored by Assemblywoman Didi Barrett, D-Hudson, and Sen. Michelle Hinchey, D-Saugerties, would create a 25% tax credit for New Yorkers to revitalize historic barns in the state constructed before 1945.
The bill unanimously passed both houses of the state Legislature last month a few days before session concluded June 10. It had not been delivered to the governor’s desk as of press time Thursday.
“So many of these barns are falling into disarray because of the sheer cost to rehabilitate them or preserve them,” Hinchey said in front of a historic barn in Livingston, Columbia County, on Thursday. “The sooner (the bill is signed), the sooner the barns are saved.” ....

New York state lawmakers on Wednesday gave final passage to a bill creating a nine-member commission to address cyberbullying in the state.
The bill, approved in the state Senate, has previously passed in the Assembly and now goes to Gov. Andrew Cuomo s desk for his approval.
“Cyberbullying is a serious issue across our State and we need a plan to stop it,” said Sen. Todd Kaminsky in a statement. “My bill will not only create a task force to study this menace to our teens, but will also help foster solutions to help end this crisis, which has plagued far too many individuals of all ages across Long Island and the State as a whole.” ....

GOP, landlords call for end to eviction ban

ALBANY — Republicans and landlords on Wednesday pushed back against a Democratic proposal to extend the eviction moratorium originally passed to provide relief during the COVID-19 crisis.
The Assembly Minority Conference held a virtual news conference Wednesday morning calling on state lawmakers to end the moratorium that denies property owners the ability to evict tenants who do not pay their rent.
A vote on the extension was originally slated for this week in the state Legislature, but on Wednesday, the vote was delayed until Monday.
The moratorium was first passed in May of last year, early in the COVID-19 pandemic, in an effort to assist tenants who were impacted economically by the coronavirus outbreak. ....
