    National Freedom Day observed virtually and tackles theme ‘From Captivity to Captivated’ The Wright Choice Initiative hosted National Freedom Day observances on Monday, Feb. 1. Events included an on-campus fwreath-laying ceremony, as well as, a virtual live stream presentation in partnership with the National Freedom Day Association of Philadelphia.
The Wright Choice Initiative, a Title III-funded mentoring program, is named for Richard R. Wright Sr., SSU’s first president. Wright is considered the architect of National Freedom Day, established to commemorate President Lincoln signing a resolution proposing the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery in the United States. A proclamation naming Feb. 1 National Freedom Day was signed by President Truman in 1948. ....

3:40 p.m. Duval County adds 28 COVID-19 deaths, second-highest daily toll; 103 deaths in Florida
Duval County recorded its second-highest single-day death count to date in the coronavirus pandemic in Sunday s daily report from the Florida Department of Health, as the death toll continued its climb in spite of recent gains in vaccination.
The health department recorded 28 more deaths in Duval County, raising the county s COVID-19 toll to 982. Only the report of Jan. 19, which added 40 deaths, showed a larger increase.
Because of delays in the state s process for tabulating deaths, however, it is not yet clear when the newly-reported deaths occurred. In many cases, deaths listed on state reports actually occurred multiple days or weeks earlier. | Read more ....

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) Black Americans are more hesitant than whites to take the COVID vaccine. Reasons for that hit close to home in Savannah, and include a classified military operation in the 1950s that dropped hundreds of thousands of mosquitoes mosquitoes that many believe were infected with disease on Carver Village.
“They didn’t tell anybody, and it happened,” said Chatham County Commission Chairman Chester Ellis. “And so that leaves some apprehension, especially when you have residents of that area who’ve been there since the ’50s. And so my job as neighborhood president, and also as chairman of the County Commission, is to kind of calm the storm down to let them know that this vaccination is not like that.” ....

More than 1,000 active duty troops will begin supporting vaccination sites around the United States, starting later this month in California, White House senior COVID-19 advisor Andy Slavitt announced Friday.
