Success in news is all about one simple value argues Truescope CEO, and former iSentia CEO, John Croll.

The annual Reuter’s Digital News Report, the 2021 edition of which was released a few weeks ago, discusses the accelerated digitisation of the media industry due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Of course, the digitisation of the media has been in progress for many decades, but in the wake of the expected economic downturn caused by the pandemic, as well as the reduction of the physical distribution capabilities of media, print ad revenues more quickly dried up and media outlets have been more rapidly forced online. ....

Clive Palmer and Kerry Stokes paper rapped for spreading Covid vaccine misinformation | Amanda Meade

Stokes hired Cronin as editor-in-chief of West Australian Newspapers after he bought the paper in 2008.
After the interview aired – and Weekly Beast heard it in full – we noticed it had been deleted from the 6PR website.
A few days later Cronin returned to the airways to clarify, correct and apologise to Stokes. The original interview was reposted with the offending material edited out.
We can’t repeat the potentially defamatory part of Cronin’s interview but we can tell you he said he was worried about concentration of media ownership, pointing to Stokes owning the West Australian, the Sunday Times, PerthNow and the Seven network, on top of his regional and suburban assets. ....

The mining magnate Clive Palmer has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on newspaper ads attacking his opponents and making false claims about Australia’s Covid-19 vaccination program.
The Australian Press Council, which monitors newspaper standards, has so far been silent about this potentially dangerous spreading of misinformation.
But now the Independent Media Council, a press-council equivalent for Kerry Stokes’ stable of newspapers, has stepped up and criticised the West Australian, upholding a complaint against it for publishing a full-page advertisement by Palmer criticising the safety and legality of the Covid vaccination program, which contained factual inaccuracies it deemed unfair and “serious errors”, because they were “likely to undermine public confidence” in ....

Founding editor of Buzzfeed Australia, Simon Crerar, to co-launch local news startup

Founding editor of Buzzfeed Australia, Simon Crerar, to co-launch local news startup
February 4, 2021 8:01
Buzzfeed Australia’s founding editor and former general manager, Simon Crerar, has partnered with three other co-founders to create a local news startup. PS Media’s purpose is addressing the market failure for local news, including establishing mastheads in communities where newspapers have shuttered, creating news deserts.
Since early 2019, 194 local newsrooms have closed, Crerar told Mumbrella. The new platform will have a different business model to other “creaking and struggling” regional news companies and employ local journalists. But before the launch, planned for next year, the first steps are to fundraise, listen to what communities want, and “co-create this with Australia”. ....

Vanity is more dangerous than COVID in 2021

Vanity is more dangerous than COVID in 2021
Success and recovery in a post-COVID world involves more than an obsession with metrics, argues The Code Company managing director Ben May.

How will you measure success as a media operator in 2021?
Will you base it on how many people visit your website? Or how big your social audience is? And what if you’ve relied on physical indications of success, like event attendees, sponsorships or print sales – what happens now?
There’s no shortage of articles lamenting the catastrophic effects of 2020 on traditional publishing models. Here’s a random selection: ....
