Crestwood honors three alumni


A Tuskegee Airman, an acclaimed Philadelphia chef and a saxophonist on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” are the first alumni chosen by Crestwood School District for a new honor.
Each of the Distinguished Alumni Award winners announced during a school board meeting Feb. 18 showed skill and social conscience throughout their careers.
Lt. Col. James Harvey, a 1942 graduate of Fairview High School, joined the Tuskegee Airmen at the end of World War II .

Monica Hall-Porter has dedicated her career to creating a robust pipeline for students who are interested in pursuing STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) careers. As the faculty development coordinator in the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Texas in Austin, Hall-Porter supports professional development for faculty that centers on improving and enhancing science pedagogy.
Throughout her career, Hall-Porter has advocated for best practices in STEM education, specifically methods to promote and sustain student engagement. By creating opportunities for students to have hands-on experiences in laboratory settings, they can see science processes in action.
Take the Freshman Research Initiative (FRI) at the University of Texas. Through this program, first-year students experience the excitement of scientific discovery firsthand. Participants do real-world research, use cutting-edge lab equipment, develop technological innovations, and publish ....

“What really motivates me is being able to spread the joy and the thrill of science,” Diondra Dilworth says. Dilworth is a third-year Ph.D. candidate in chemistry at Yale, researching how ribosomes can act as catalysts. She is committed to spreading her love of science and creating a supportive scientific community for her peers and students. Dilworth combines her passions for science as a researcher, mentor, and teacher to those around her.
Growing up
Before she began her research career, Dilworth grew up in Las Vegas, NV, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, but, for Dilworth, her home. Having grown up with two younger sisters, Dilworth always filled the role of support and guidance for those around her. Her maternal grandparents, who were both schoolteachers, were two of her biggest inspirations.
