March 17, 2021 A new study published online in the
Annals of the American Thoracic Society reveals how socioeconomic factors partially explain the increased odds that Black and Hispanic Americans have of testing positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
In Association of Race and Ethnicity With COVID-19 Test Positivity and Hospitalization Is Mediated by Socioeconomic Factors, Hayley B. Gershengorn, MD, associate professor, Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and co-authors looked at the medical records of 15,473 patients tested and 295 hospitalized with COVID-19 between March 1, 2020 and July 23, 2020 at University of Miami hospitals and clinics. Minority students have been nominated to military service academies at disproportionately lower rates than their white counterparts for more than two decades, according to a study published Wednesday based on admissions data.
The report, published by the Connecticut Veterans Legal Center and the Veterans Legal Services Clinic at Yale Law School, found that over a period of nearly 25 years, members of Congress have awarded just 6 percent of their military academy nominations to Black students and 8 percent to Hispanic applicants. White students received 74 percent of all lawmaker nominations.
One portion of the study looked at nominations from 2009-2019 and found that 32 percent of nominations from House Democrats were for students of color, compared to 15 percent among House Republicans. ....

Return to work and the path to recovery after serious injury in Black men

Credit: Penn Nursing
PHILADELPHIA (March 16, 20201) - After a traumatic injury, returning to work (RTW) can be a strong indication of healing and rehabilitation and may play a pivotal role in promoting physical and functional recovery. The study also found that younger age, lack of insurance or public insurance, and experiences of racism within and beyond the workplace were concurrently strong predictors of poor mental health outcomes. ....
