LONDON: Thousands of Sikhs marched in London city to remember the victims of the attack on Sri Harmandir Sahib, popularly known as the Golden Temple, in Amritsar by the Indian authorities in 1984.
Every year thousands of Sikhs gather in London to mark the anniversary of the ‘1984 Sikh genocide’ but last year was an exception due to the Covid-19 SOPs. This year’s march was organised by the Federation of Sikh Organisations (FSO), in which Sikhs from across the UK travelled to London to take part in the march to walk through the Central London before reaching the Trafalgar Square, where the marchers paid tributes to the martyrs of 1984 Sikh massacre. The march started from Wellington Arch, led by the Panj Pyare, the five beloved with their swords drawn, passed through the iconic route of the Constitution Hill and The Mall to Trafalgar Square.

COVID-19 Special: 'Black fungus' infections rise in India
But in 2013, on the way to Gurdwara Hemkund Sahib, a Sikh pilgrimage site in the northern state of Uttarakhand, his family was stranded after a massive cloudburst. Over 5,000 people lost their lives in the floods that followed.
The family made it out alive, but the incident left an indelible mark on their lives.
In the years that followed, the foundation has worked across states in India and internationally, even providing humanitarian aid to the Philippines in the aftermath of the Taal volcano eruption last year.
India's unprecedented oxygen crisis
When the second COVID wave hit India hard in April, the health care infrastructure buckled under the weight of a massive coronavirus caseload. At its peak, India reported over 400,000 new infections and 4,000 fatalities a day, overwhelming hospitals and crematoriums. Experts believe the real numbers are far higher.

The Associated Press reports Sikh Coalition’s Aasees Kaur said, ““We must support one another, not just in grief, but in calling our policymakers and elected officials to make meaningful change. The time to act is not later, but now. We are far too many tragedies, too late, in doing so.”
Kiran Deol said, “We need more reform. We need gun laws to be harder, stronger, so that responsible people are the ones that have guns. That’s what we want to bring awareness to.”
