July 5, Beijing, Indigo Glamour Co Ltd, a subsidiary of MBK Partners and CAR Inc, a Hong Kong Stock Exchange listed company, jointly announced a completion of the mandatory acquisition. All remaining offer shares of CAR Inc have been transferred to the offeror, indicating that CAR Inc, the Chinese auto rental service provider has completed the privatization and become a wholly-owned subsidiary of MBK Partners. It will be delisted from the Hong Kong Stock Exchange at 9 am on July 8, 2021.
MBK Partners, a leading private equity firm in North Asia, planned to acquire all the 443 million shares of CAR Inc held by UCAR Inc, another Chinese car-rental company, at a price of HKUSD4.00 (USD0.52) per share for a total price of approximately HKUSD1.771 billion on November 10, 2020, becoming the second largest shareholder after Legend Holdings Corp. Two days later, MBK Partners put forward a voluntary comprehensive cash offer with prerequisites. The offer price per share was HKUSD4.00, involving approximately HKUSD8.49 billion.

중국 명문 칭화대가 여론의 도마 위에 올랐다. 칭화대 미대 졸업작품 패션쇼가 원인이었다. 현지 네티즌들은 모델의 메이크업이 중국인의 이미지를 우스꽝스럽게 만들었다고 분개했다. 서방에서 동양인을 비하하는 ‘찢어진 눈’을 강조해 스스로를 희화화했다고 지적했다.

이후 불편한 심경을 드러내는 글들이 올라오기 시작했다. 일주일이 넘도록 네티즌들의 글과 관련 기사가 쏟아지면서 ‘칭화대 미대’는 ‘실눈(眯眯眼)’이라는 키워드와 함께 중국 SNS를 도배했다.

칭화대 미대 패션 디자인 전공 졸업작품 발표회 [사진 터우탸오] ‘칭화대 패션쇼’ 사건의 쟁점은 칭화대 학생들의 만든 옷이 아니라 모델의 아이 메이크업이었다. 가느다란 실눈을 강조한 메이크업 방식을 문제 삼았다. 서양인들이 아시아인의 외모를 비하할 때 사용하는 이미지를 굳이 나서서 사용할 필요가 있느냐고 비판했다.

반면, 이 같은 비난 여론이 지나치다는 의견도 있다. 이번 발표회의 메이크업 스타일은 글로벌 패션쇼에도 자주 선택되는 방식으로, 모델이 입은 옷을 좀 더 잘 보이게 하려는 의도라는 것이다. 편견 없이 바라본다면 문제될 것이 없고, ‘가늘고 긴 눈’은 동양인의 특징이니 그 자체를 자연스러운 미(美)로 바라봐야 한다는 입장이다. 메이크업에 꽂혀 정작 디자인에 대한 평가는 사라진 것 같아 아쉽다는 평도 나왔다.

당시 돌체앤가바나 인스타그램에 올라온 홍보 영상 속 "중국인의 이미지가 촌스럽고 우스꽝스럽게 묘사됐다"는 비난 여론이 일었다. 이어 돌체앤가바나 디자이너 겸 창립자가 중국을 모욕한 사실까지 폭로되면서 전 국민적인 불매운동으로 번졌다.

또 다른 명품 브랜드 버버리도 2019년 1월 춘제(春节 중국의 음력설) 테마 광고로 여론의 뭇매를 맞았다. 버버리는 명절에 가족이 나누는 친밀한 정을 표현했다고 설명했지만, 중국 네티즌들은 경직되고 보수적이며 음침한 분위기의 광고에 반감을 표했다. 이번 칭화대 패션쇼 논란은 해외 브랜드의 잘못을 지적한 것이 아니라 자국의 학교에서 벌어진 일을 자체적으로 비판했다는 점이 다르다.
2018년 논란이 된 돌체앤가바나 영상 캡쳐 [사진 텅쉰왕] ‘가늘고 긴 눈’은 동양의 아름다움을 표현한 것일까. 고정관념적인 이미지를 불필요하게 강조한 것일까. 현지 학계 및 전문가들은 이번 사태를 어떻게 바라보고 있을까.

베이징대 중문과 교수이자 유명 평론가 장이우(张颐武)는 “칭화대 패션쇼에 선 모델의 스타일이 중국 현지에서 추구하는 미의 기준과는 차이가 있기 때문에 네티즌들도 그에 대한 평가를 내릴 권리가 있다”면서도 “이 사건을 단순히 중국을 모욕한 행위라 해석해서는 안 된다”고 밝혔다. 칭화대 졸업 예정자들이 올린 패션쇼를 “중국 자국을 희화화하고 서방에 영합”하려는 의도로 보는 것은 지나치다는 얘기다.

반면, 칭화대 박사 출신이자 베이징외국어대 교수를 지낸 차오무(乔木)는 이번 칭화대 패션쇼를 신랄하게 비판했다. 그는 돌체앤가바나 사건을 언급하며, 당시 광고 속 주인공도 역시 가늘고 긴 눈의 전형적인 이미지였고, 이는 서방인들이 중국인을 바라보는 차별적인 이미지라고 주장했다.
