WASHINGTON The Thumb’s newest representative in Congress will fill a role similar to other area representatives in the past.
Lisa McClain will be serving on the House Armed Services Committee subcommittees dealing with military personnel and readiness.
The Subcommittee on Military Personnel oversees the Department of Defense Policy and programs related to military personnel, health care, military education, dependent schools, prisoner of war/missing in action issues, welfare and recreation, commissaries, cemeteries under the jurisdiction of the Department of Defense, the Uniform Code of Military Justice, military retirement issues and reserve component integration and employment. ....

Recent reports of current service members, veterans and some military retirees participating in the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 have prompted calls for investigations into those connections and using the Uniform Code of Military Justice to prosecute the offenders.
But the law is complicated each of those groups falls into different categories when it comes to the UCMJ and military justice might not apply in many cases. The trickiest is retirees. ....
