A U.S. intelligence report made public Friday singles out Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, saying he approved the operation that killed Jamal Khashoggi, 59, a Washington Post contributing columnist and former Saudi royal insider who had become a leading critic of the kingdom's government.
Khashoggi was last seen alive in October 2018 entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul. His gruesome killing and dismemberment - of which Turkish officials obtained an audio recording - roiled U.S.-Saudi relations and have been under investigation since then.

The young midshipman heard the question but kept walking as he neared a group of White students at the Naval Academy.
"You know, the only reason you're here is the quota system, right?" one of them said.
Cecil Haney, a Black student from a Black neighborhood in the District of Columbia, did not respond. His family had warned him that he could face racism at the academy, and more than 40 years later, he remembers the remark clearly.

A beloved and historic Potomac River ferry shuttered by legal disputes last year may have a new chance to shuttle again. White's Ferry, which has carried passengers between Maryland and Virginia since the late 1700s, has been purchased by businessman Chuck Kuhn, chief executive of JK Moving Services.
Kuhn hopes to settle the drama over property rights, restore the boat to working condition, and return to shuttling an estimated 800 vehicles per day. Commuters willing to pay the $8 round trip used the ferry to cut down on driving time between Montgomery County, Md., and Loudoun County, Va.

A D.C. judge Monday dismissed a murder charge against an anti-violence counselor in the District who had been accused in a 2017 fatal shooting, concluding authorities did not have enough evidence linking him to the crime, according to court officials and the man's defense attorney.
Following a preliminary hearing, D.C. Superior Court Judge Danya Dayson ordered that 39-year-old Cotey Wynn be released from D.C. jail.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin faces an early test as he races to advance a major initiative targeting far-right extremism in the ranks, a challenge that officials acknowledge is complicated by the Pentagon's lack of clarity on the extent of the threat following the U.S. Capitol riot.
Austin's highly unusual order for a military-wide "stand-down," slated to pause normal operations in coming weeks so troops can discuss internal support for extremist movements, underscores the urgency of the task ahead for the former four-star general, who last month became the nation's first African American Pentagon chief.

More than 400,000 Americans are dead from covid-19 in the 11 months since the first confirmed U.S. fatality from the disease. Current models predict an additional 200,000 could be dead by late spring. Intensive care units nationwide are nearly 80 percent full. Vaccination is going far more slowly than necessary to keep up with the epidemic.
