(WASHINGTON) President Joe Biden has commissioned Dr. Kevin O’Connor as his new White House physician, replacing Dr. Sean Conley in a role that became a source of controversy under former President Donald Trump’s four years in the White House.
It’s not unusual for a new president to select their personal physician for their term, However, O’Connor will take on the job in the medical unit that faced a crisis of credibility under Trump following rosy readouts of physicals and misleading information about his COVID-19 treatment.
O’Connor has served as Biden’s primary care physician since 2009, when he was appointed physician to the vice president and was chosen by Biden for the new role due to their long history, and personal relationship, according to a White House official. ....

Su Examines Genetic Susceptibility to Severe Covid-19 Infection

By Rich McManus
NIAID’s Dr. Helen Su
When the global pandemic caused by a novel coronavirus made its debut in late 2019, NIAID’s Dr. Helen Su was studying inborn errors of immunity in patients with viral infections, mostly rhinoviruses, which cause colds, and influenza. Why, she wondered, was there such variability of outcomes in people infected with the same virus?
In a remarkable example of the NIH Intramural Research Program’s nimbleness, she and her colleagues quickly pivoted to studies of SARS-CoV-2 when it became apparent that Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus, was spreading fast and becoming, in at least a small portion of patients, life-threatening. ....

WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 31st December, 2020) US military scientists identified a miniature antibody - a nanobody - produced by a llama that appears to work well in liquid or aerosol form, suggesting it could help protect a person from the novel coronavirus, the Defense Department said in a press release on Thursday.
The researchers found that at least one of these nanobodies, called NIH-CoVnb-112, may be highly effective at preventing infections or detecting virus particles by grabbing hold of SARS-CoV-2 [Covid-19] spike proteins, the release said. ....
