Police have said they are still working to determine a motive, but Long’s statements spurred outrage and widespread skepticism in the Asian American community, which has increasingly been targeted for violence during the coronavirus pandemic.
Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. Jay Baker drew criticism for saying Long had “a really bad day” and “this is what he did.”
Sheriff Frank Reynolds released a statement Thursday acknowledging that some of Baker’s comments stirred “much debate and anger” and said the agency regrets any “heartache” caused by his words. ....

Eight people, including six Asian women, were killed at three different businesses in Cherokee County and Atlanta. Police believe a 21-year-old Woodstock man is responsible for all three shootings.

What happened:
At about 4:50 p.m. on March 16, a man, who police identified as 21-year-old Robert Aaron Long, of Woodstock, arrived at Young’s Asian Massage on Highway 92 near Bells Ferry Road in Cherokee County and allegedly shot five people. Two Asian women, one white woman, and one white man were killed. Authorities identified the victims as Delaina Ashley Yaun, 33, of Acworth; Daoyou Feng, 44; Xiaojie Tan, 49, of Kennesaw; and Paul Andre Michels, 54, of Atlanta. The surviving victim, Elcias Hernandez-Ortiz, of Acworth, is at WellStar Kennestone Hosp ....

Massage parlors are known to sometimes provide prostitution services, but authorities say there is no indication yet that this is the case at the targeted locations.
