BOGOTA (Reuters) - Highly-trained Colombian soldiers left at a loose end after retirement have frequently been tempted by opportunities to ply their trade abroad as private military contractors from Iraq to Yemen, military officials and experts said on Friday.

US, Colombia sending agents to Haiti to help probe president s killing
Haitian police identified the two as James Solages, 35, and Joseph Vincent, 55, saying that they were part of a heavily armed commando unit comprised mostly of 26 Colombians, who sources in the Colombian army said entered Haiti from the neighboring Dominican Republic.

Haiti has requested US and UN security forces to help it protect key infrastructure like the airport and ports after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise by foreign mercenaries, a government minister said on Friday.
The assassination of Moise by a squad of gunmen in the early hours of Wednesday morning at his home in Port-au-Prince pitched Haiti deeper into a political crisis which may worsen growing hunger, gang violence and a COVID-19 outbreak.

Haitian police nab 17 assassination suspects
Colombian General Luis Fernando Navarro said the Colombian ex-soldiers were likely mercenaries.
The recruitment of Colombian soldiers to go to other parts of the world as mercenaries is an issue that has existed for a long time, because there is no law that prohibits it, Navarro told reporters on Friday. There are a signficant number of Colombian soldiers in Dubai, for example.
Haitian officials claim Moise was killed by a 28-member hit squad composed of 26 Colombians and two Americans of Haitian descent.
So far, 17 suspects have been arrested over the assassination.
