State shield laws
Although almost all states, including Oregon, have similar legal protections for reporters and others against forced disclosure of confidential news sources known as shield laws there is no federal shield law. State laws do not apply to investigations by federal agencies.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a 1972 case, Branzburg v. Hayes, there is no federal constitutional guarantee that keeps reporters from being compelled to testify to a grand jury. But the court invited states to enact their own laws, and the Oregon Legislature did so in 1973.
Oregon s law was advocated by Gov. Tom McCall, himself a newspaper and broadcast journalist. The law was passed after a controversy in 1966, when McCall ran for governor the first time. ....

The Office of the New York Attorney General said in a new report that a campaign funded by the broadband industry submitted millions of fake comments supporting the 2017 repeal of net neutrality.
The Federal Communications Commission’s contentious 2017 repeal undid Obama-era rules that barred internet service providers from slowing or blocking websites and apps or charging companies more for faster speeds to consumers. The industry had sued to stop these rules during the Obama administration but lost. ....
