THAILAND: The government has been urged to carry out its mass vaccination drive against COVID-19 within three months, after a recent study found a single dose of the vaccine can increase immunity against the virus by 96.7%.

Renowned virologist Yong Poovorawan wrote on his Facebook page yesterday (May 3) that a study conducted on Thais who had received one shot of the AstraZeneca vaccine showed a 96.7% improvement in immunity against the virus when compared to unvaccinated individuals, while those who have recovered from COVID-19 between 4-8 weeks prior to testing showed a 92.4% improvement in immunity. The study was carried out on 61 individuals for one month after they received their first shot. ....

Preventive measures key in fight against Covid-19


News that Uganda has registered the Indian Covid-19 variant is frightening. Col Dr Henry Kyobe, the Covid-19 incident commander, revealed that the country has now registered five Covid-19 variants, namely Uganda, India, Nigeria, South Africa, and UK strains.
He said the UK, South Africa, and India variants are more transmissible and mainly affect a younger age group (“Uganda confirms Indian strain”, Daily Monitor of April 30.)
India is currently battling an overwhelming number of Covid-19 infections with shortage of oxygen, medicine and hospital beds plaguing the country.  
The situation is so dire that they are reportedly running out of space for cremations. By the end of last week, the country had more than 3,500 deaths nationwide.  ....

LONDON: AstraZeneca has revealed it banked revenues of 275 million US dollars (£197 million) in the first three months of the year from sales of its Covid-19 vaccine, delivering 68 million doses worldwide.
The pharmaceutical, which is not making a profit from the vaccine, added that, of those sales, 224 million dollars (£160.6 million) worth were in Europe, 43 million dollars (£30.8 million) in emerging markets and 8 million dollars (£5.7 million) in the rest of the world.
Bosses said sales of some of the company’s other drugs had been affected by the global pandemic, as other medical conditions went untreated, but overall sales remained strong. ....

A fire in a Covid-19 hospital ward in western India killed 18 patients today, as the country grappling with the worst outbreak yet steps up a vaccination drive for all its adults even though some states say they don t have enough jabs.
India set yet another daily global record with 401,993 new cases, taking its tally to more than 19.1 million. Another 3,523 people died in the past 24 hours, raising the overall fatalities to 211,853, according to the Health Ministry. Experts believe both figures are an undercount. ....
