Matawai farmer John Bracken, who became New Zealand's biggest-ever tax fraudster when he fleeced the IRD for $17.3 million through bogus GST refund claims, has been jailed for eight years, six months.
Bracken, 55, was sentenced this morning by Justice Graham Lang in the High Court at Gisborne.
The sentence met with a loud objection from one of Bracken's stalwart supporters, his McKenzie friend at trial Peter Helmbright, who yelled it would be appealed, that the court had no jurisdiction to impose it and that it defied a previously agreed initiative for better relationships between Māori and Pākehā authorities.

John Bracken told the court he had always done what his accountants and his bank had asked.
Crown lawyer Megan Mitchell said the crime called for a high sentence as it was the largest crime of its kind.
She said the fraud was “repetitive and involved a high degree of planning and premeditation” and Bracken only stopped offending when he became aware it had been detected.
She said about $12m of property had been restrained and efforts to recover this were underway but were being “vigorously opposed” by Bracken.
Some funds had been recovered but there remained $1.1million outstanding that would never be recovered, she said.

In response to Alex McCuaig’s column, “Conservative politics at a crossroads in Canada,” published in the April 27 edition of the News.
How interesting to analyze a socialist’s views of conservatism. Alex McCuaig does not know what a real Conservative Party would look like. Recent conservatism is not at a crossroads; It never got out of the garage and onto the highway.
If Canada ever had a strong conservative government it was before and during our years as the miracle Dominion which defied Britain’s loss of interest in her North American colonies along with fears of Americans annexing what is now Western Canada.
