Washington, DC, May 12, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) Inequality in the US education system has high costs for society, according to a new thought experiment from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce (CEW). If the United States committed to achieving more equal postsecondary educational attainment by income and race/ethnicity, with an initial investment of $3.97 trillion, our country could see annual public benefits of $956 billion, in addition to numerous nonmonetary benefits.
The report also highlights nonmonetary benefits associated with increasing educational attainment, including increased critical thinking abilities, stronger civic engagement, lower inclinations toward authoritarianism, better health, more pluralistic orientations, boosts in agency and empowerment, and a rise in happiness. ....

Brandi McCutchen calls her son “Smiley Brylee” because he always has a smile on his face, despite facing the serious challenge of cerebral palsy.
At 20, Brylee is only 58 pounds and 49 inches tall. Without the ability to walk, talk or clear his throat, he requires constant monitoring by his family and health professionals at his home in Hendersonville, Tennessee. His survival depends on it.
But the medical costs and needs are high, which leaves Brylee and his family fully reliant on the care they receive through Tennessee’s Medicaid program, known as TennCare health coverage used by approximately 1.6 million people in the state. ....

WASHINGTON Elise Stefanik knows how to pick her battles.
At a small town-hall meeting in 2018, she called for President Donald Trump’s EPA administrator, Scott Pruitt, to resign.
The demands burnished the New York Republican’s brand as an independent thinker in her politically heterodox upstate district, which voted for Trump even though environment and climate change matter a lot to the ski resorts and lakeside retreats that dot the Adirondacks. ....

Stefanik ranked 13th most bipartisan representative of Congress

WATERTOWN — Rep. Elise M. Stefanik has been named the 13th most bipartisan member of Congress, according to the nonpartisan public policy thinktank The Lugar Center.
In conjunction with Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy, The Lugar Center publishes a Bipartisan Index for each Congress, ranking members based on how many bills they sponsor or co-sponsor with members of the opposing party.
For the 116th Congress, which ran from 2019 to 2020, Rep. Stefanik, R-Schuylerville, placed 13th out of all 435 representatives in the House. That’s higher than her ranks of 19th and 14th in her last two terms, respectively.
“I am honored to be ranked in the top 3% most bipartisan Members of Congress by the Lugar Center,” Rep. Stefanik said in a prepared statement announcing the ranking. “Since taking office, I have kept my promise to my constituents to work to deliver results to the North Country.
